Legendary Armor Sets?
Throughout playing this game, I've often come across various pieces of armor with a unique name and a yellow color, but in most cases the drops are seemingly completely random.

So, are there set locations for the pieces of these armorsets or is it entirely random and luck based?

(I've tried looking this up, but there is surprisingly little information about this on the wiki or otherwise.)

From what I've seen there is really only one set that is always in the same places (Dirge's armor), but everything else is random and the stats are based on your character's current level.

Ah, so is there any known method for farming specific sets of legendary armor? Or is one equally likely to aquire a piece of legendary armor from a generic enemy as they would a tougher sub-boss, for example?

Yeah, this is my second time through and I pretty much ignore those 'sets', they cluster in specific areas seemingly based on quest levels but by the time you rate one, you've already got much better stuff on you...

You receive armor sets by finishing the faction quests (Shadow Skin from finishing the Traveler Faction quest line for example), from finishing some of the DLC quests (one of three sets depending on play style from the main quest in the Teeth of Naros DLC for example) and you can take the Vengeance Armor Set off the leader of the House of Vengeance after the "Taking Vengeance" quest in the main quest line in the main game.

Otherwise its completely random. The YouTuber ManufacturedOpinion has a video on what he calls "Loot Manipulation" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxN8mWU1QVQ&t=15s but I personally have never really gotten it to work for me. You can try it if you want to see if it works for you. The stats depend on your current character level.

As it seems to me at the moment, the increadible amount of playtime one would need to devote to the aquisition of a specific piece of loot is far too high to be worth it. Thank you all for your input and suggestions, but I think that it would be far less hassle if I just continue playing as I was already.
