It's up to you how you want to play. I personally get tired of doing just the main game quest line and tend to mix in side quests and the two DLCs later at later levels before I finish the main game. Once you are at level 10 or higher you can do the DLCs at any time, you don't need to finish the main game or do them at the beginning (in the case of Dead Kel you can't do it at the beginning.)
And yes, definitely. The DLCs do have new armor and weapons. You can look them up on google to see how they look. I'm farming for the pirate armor pieces (they're not in a set) in the Dead Kel DLC. The only piece I'm missing are the leggings.
(For the record, I played +300 hours-two playthroughs (40-50 hours in Teeth of Naros and 20-25 hours in Dead Kel. I also wrote a review of the main/core game and Teeth of Naros. DLC).
