Yes, at the moment the starting positions are predefined (but each faction has their own starting area on each map). Which enemy you will face will be different though, since we are usually having around 15 clans on a sandbox map, territorial occupation might be drastically different between different playthroughs

Great idea; something a la Civ or Gladius when it comes to random map generation would give the game tremendous replayability. If not now during the beta (understandable), but hopefully down the line. Game looks very interesting.
No randomized map is planned at the moment. But as with most mechanics, it really depends what the majority of the community would like to see in the game. :)

Maybe I’m just bad, but on the default map, Morterra, with the Dracul my closest opponent keeps doing the same thing over and over again. I then die (or so close to that I cant come back) on turn 7 when I get attacked by two different armies from two factions on both ends of my territory.
It would be nice if I started at a different Keep on the map just to change up how each playthrough plays (starting close to blacksmith/library For tech as opposed to graveyard/caves for reinforcements). Different initial enemy encounters so even if the AI is pretty deterministic, each playthrough feels different.
I don’t wish to sound harsh, I’m really enjoying the game and sandbox has been a lot of fun. I also know it’s a beta and there are a bunch of things to be tweaked and changed. I’m just saying why I hope the suggestion of more randomized initial conditions becomes a feature that is included in release.
I really hope this happens in the near future. This is such an important feature to a player like me in these types of games.
sh*t ... i was afraid of that. i love 4x games and i love vampire themes, but a 4x styled game with no random map kills the replayability in my mind.
but please more different starting positions in the sandbox.
Also a starter kit would be welcome with options, like maybe
-a choice of the T2 and T3 troops instead of the given standard,
-optional maybe one extra T1 outside of faction by choice or random (might be a wandering soul from a destroyed keep in the neighborhood asking for help in revenge, as an extra might show that keep on map...could be good first expansion direction)...T1 might even advance to T2 once keep is taken back....
-starting maybe some heirloom ring from the forefathers, item by choice or predetermined random from a certain select from T1, accompanied by Quest (task?) to find uberheirlooms hidden somewhere (keep maybe?) on other side of map (another good expansion motivator)
-choice (or predetermined?) preferred enemyfaction, boni might be extra blood won, 5% more damage against, etc.
-above paired with feared faction (more dmg taken in fights and less dmg done...)
-have option of being able to promote T1 to T2 to T3, like at resp recruit building, cost should be same as upgraded buy price normally, maybe plus 5% for each level of veterancy.
-Have Beginner start option, with Hero all kitted out in T1 gear
-option to scale Hero XP and Clan XP differently
-Beginner Option to have two closest enemies start out one, two or three (choice of option) turns later, reason might be delayed by state-wedding or hunt for escaped prisoner (could tie in with above refugee) or...etc...
-Sandbox win option of having to destroy complete other faction
Anyways, just some ideas for how to make sandbox with a bit more replayability...
Cheers
