I agree with most of the comments in which steps to take to somewhat save the game:
1. Make it offline/Lan capable
2. Give/Sell it to another developer Studio
Both options would have been logical steps to save the game that you as a team put alot of time in. But from what I've read, for some reason it's not possible or there is no interest in pursuing these steps.
Instead of letting all the passion, time and labour go to waist and prolonging the death of "Second Extinction", I propose a simple solution:
Put everything -finished and unfinished content, future ideas, pictures, assets, code- in the game files and release it as a final update. Make the game open source and free to use for everyone instead of letting such a great game die a slow, underserved and dishonorable death. There are many talented people and dedicated fans out there, who would gladly make something out of the game, which you already abandoned.
That damage in trust and reputation is unavoidable, but you can save your legacy by releasing a great game by a good development team to community you failed to satisfy and saddened by giving them false hope.
That's my only message to you as a part of the community you've gathered around this gem of a game. Good luck in the future.
Reasonable. And better than simply letting the project rot (not to mention the paid players).
Offline Mode: We can't add an offline mode because it would require major restructuring of the way the game works, which we do not have the resources for (If we did, we'd have used them to finish the game).
Mod tools / Open Source: This would also require a major overhaul and extra work to implement the tools, so the answer is the same as above.
Refunds: You can request a refund through Steam. If they decline it, there is unfortunately nothing we can do as we can't give refunds ourselves for transactions that happened on another platform.
Game Servers: The servers will stay online for you to play on until sometime next year, when we will take them offline. You will not be able to access the game after we take them offline.
Our lack of communication before this announcement: Rather than share our plans before they were finalized, we decided to wait until we had discussed every available option and settled on a final course of action. This ended up taking much longer than anticipated, so we apologize for keeping you and all of our players in the dark for such a long time without any news.
Remember, you are very much allowed to be frustrated, that's understandable. However, insults and personal attacks are against Steam TOS, so they will get removed and actions will be taken accordingly. Remember to stay civil in these Discussion forums.
