I saw the History mode showcase and I wasn't impressed, but I'm hoping there is something else beyond the Boruto storyline and just single match Vs. mode.
A lot of people don't seem to realize that this game isn't a mainline game, maybe due to the franchise not getting any spin off entry since the 360/PS3 generation.
Storm 2 added back dash, removed combo after chakra dash whiff, fixed a lot of hitstun issues, revamped the entire roster, added support actions, added unique charged U1s, added air U1s, made U2s shorter, made ninja dash faster, fixed chakra kunai tracking, and added U3s
Storm Gen added jump cancels, added ninja move cancels, added dash cancels, added back dash cancels, added the sub bar, brought back all the storm 1 roster and still added a ton more unique characters, added custom ranked, added online replays, added tournament mode, added endless mode, added the ability to guard out of chakra dash, and added new dpad ninja items
Storm 3 refined the gen cancels entirely, added directional subs, added support combos, gave supports health bars, removed invincibility in supports, removed tilt->ninja move, added secret actions to story mode, increased the roster by nearly 1/3, added the ability to have DLC costumes, and added ninja dash->kunai
Storm rev added the counter, separated ultimate/awakening/drive types, rebalanced the entire roster, added the orb game mode, had THREE story modes (and none of them were dlc), increased the roster significantly AGAIN with unique characters, added a ton of movement options (r2 ninja move, ninja move jump cancel, back dash nmk cancel, etc), added the ability to cancel U1 with a spark guard, and added the ability to chakra dash out of an ukemi
Storm 4 removed kunai cancels, added leader switch, re-merged ultimate/awakening/drive, made each character have their own support actions, removed instant awakening, added more unique actions to dpad, made the counter return to neutral instead of guard break, gave more characters the ability to spark cancel U1s, and added the most characters of pretty much any storm game period
What did connections do? It made chakra auto regen 5x faster than normal, made dpad items infinite, removed tilt and chakra kunai, added a second U1, made leader switch take a full support meter, and added 5 rehashed characters. Wow, such changes clearly.
The "filler" games added more than the mainlines always, and this game has the least changes of the entire series.
Even other fighting games release this stuff as a free patch, not entirely $60 base game ($120 for all the content wtf)
Instead of using cutscenes/animations they've already made and creating new ones for extra story bits (for example half assed storm 4 story mode) they straight up replace all of it with slides and remove content .
Nah,screw this. For 60 euro? Put some effort first
Connections allows you to customize your character more than any previous Storm game. On top of the usual, we now get different winning poses, alternate costume colours, accessories are coming back from Revolution and maybe more. Pre-orders and higher tier editions offer more costumes, more accessories, more substitution items. And you can bet they will heavily monetize all of these with DLC drops every now and then to keep you spending on cosmetics.
And then of course, new characters DLC. Which will obviously be the main selling point of the game. People love the Naruto series, and especially its characters. Watch them sell us Shizune, Anko, Kurenai, Mirai for $25 and we will eat it up.
Is it dumb? Yes. Will I still buy the highest edition available of the game? Yes. Because that's the world we live in.
