TimeShift

TimeShift

Wow, I just realized
This game must have had a pretty fair bout with development hell. I just realized that I played this game on the original xbox, NO BS, in like 2005 on a demo disk. At the time, that version had Dennis Quaid and Michael Ironside involved.

EDIT: I'll be damned!

EDIT 2: It was Original Xbox Magazine Demo Disc 55!

Eeeehhhh, this game came in 2007. I'm not sure I would really call 2 years "development hell" when you compare that time gap with other games. Keep in mind, Sierra/Activision was also working on a bunch of other games at the time. Besides, 2 years is nothing compared to how long it took other games to be made and released. Case in point: Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever.

Very true, I was just shocked to find that I had played this on the orignal xbox before it got scrapped/revamped for the 360.

I saw a preview for the new Dennis Quaid movie and said to myself "What was that Quantum Leap game he was in all those years ago?" Lol, the more I dug I realized its TimeShift a game that I own!

If anyone is at all interested, there is a playable PC Demo from 2006 of the Atari version of this same game. Very very interesting look at how a game goes through changes to get to the self.

i dont see much of the change - architecture and overall design look same, i even recognise this level from mid game, it was changed in terms of layout and how it plays but look remained the same, several weapons change, some remained the same. Time shift features also remained same. Ofcourse during next 2 years and after change of publisher from Atari to Vivendi game was upgraded a lot, but biggest change here only level of graphics, game still looks impressive on pc even 10 years later, thanks to very good progamming and smart way to add extra detail layers to textures, good shadows, paralax mapping and really good artistic job. But i must say that even on original xbox they managed to make it look impressive and very detailed, i see same good detail textures everywhere with bump mapping, and stuff like that, but the most major difference is in light and shadow, original xbox version looked more flat like some halo, while final version is very volumetric thanks to improved lights and shadows.

By the way, i remember before this game even became TimeShift it was called Steam Wars and was fully steam punk, i dont remember if i saw it, but i totally remember hearing or reading what it was before. Later on steam punk changed into diesel punk style and focus changed to time features so it became time shift. i wonder if there was any Steam Wars demo shown anywhere.

Btw, did anyone notice major influence from Half Life 2 (just keep in mind that HL2 was influenced a lot by 1984) and F.E.A.R ? This game totally feels like mix of both. There is a eastern europe look and feel, there is some doctor on screens who talks about unregistered citizens just like doctro Breen in half life 2 and just like who city 17 but darker, more mature and more retro futuristic version of it, there is also sort of walking citadel that we see like whole game and chasing it, there is a suit that reminds HEV and talks about everything it detects. And time mechanics, graphic engine, AI of soldiers and overall mechanics reminds fear a lot.
