grabbing backpack is annoying
After a few hours of gameplay, I still mostly have the gun in hand when I actually want the backpack. That's annoying...

I find it easiest to grab the gun with the right hand and the backpack with the left. On occasion, I get the gun instead and I agree it's annoying, but after a while you develop sort of a "muscle memory" and you will mostly get what you're grabbing for.

Personally, I find it harder to grab the map without getting something from the hip bag.

I thought so too, but I don't. The thing is that grabbing left side of your back you also get the gun. You only get the backpack if you grab in the center but that doesn't work well.

I've found that the grab area for the backpack is very large, but that the over-the-shoulder gun grab area takes priority. If you grab basically anywhere that's even slightly behind your head and above your waist you'll get your backpack, unless you have a gun and grab within it's grab area. So instead of grabbing where a backpack would actually be if you were wearing one, grab as if you were holding onto one of those overhead handle bars in a bus or a train.
