and either a mosin or the AN-94. late game I switch to the scar-H types gun.
no need to ever bring 2 primary weapons, just bring ammo and a scope for whatever you're using.
PS: Mosin is great at any range, so long as you have cover or are good under pressure. Since it's usually a 1 shot kill.
As far as two rifles, I tried to do that with the m4 and shotgun. It just doesn't leave alot of space for loot, but it works well for clearing areas. Basically i had the m4 on the backpack so when i was ready to snipe basically just set my backpack next to me and went at it. Shotgun stayed on my back for quick draw.
I haven’t hit one with the slug yet but at close range it took me two buckshot to make one turn to an orb.
My set up right now at security lvl 3 is a pump shotgun with a 4x scope. I have it loaded with 3 buckshot topped off with 2 slug. Side saddle is filled with slugs and my sidearm is a OTs-33.
If I did my math right 1 buckshot cost the same as 3 9x18 fmj, so it pays of just giving everything a shotgun blast.
AK-74M with a grenade Launcher and open optic red dot. Usually bring 3 mags worth of FMJ and AP rounds. Sidearm is a GSH with a suppressor and 2-3 mags of HP or FMJ-AP variants depending on the depth of the run.
These three are the most common ammotypes in the game, at least so far.
If it's not clear, i'm an ultra efficient hoarder. I bought these guns because they use the ammo that i'm already finding, i can't stand to waste it
Although the ppsh is a monster and ive had to buy a huge box to feed it, i think i'm gonna downgrade the fire rate on it, its completely insane
1. OC-33 (purchased), HP round
2. AKM (stash), suppressor, long range scope, grenade launcher, AP round
3. AKS-74, suppressor, hologram sight, AP round
In armory
saw-off shot guns
long barrel shot gun
PPSH
PM Pistol
Gock Pistol
T-33 Pistol
I wish the sawed-off could be carried as a sidearm, and maybe one of the smaller SMGs. I guess that's what the oc-33 is.
I think I'll keep rolling with the Mosin and just swap out the scope for a holo if I'm doing room clearing (Trench warfare time!). May get the OC-33 or a Glock.
No SKS fans?
Makarov
Sawn off with buckshot
L2:
Fully decked OC-33 for auto mag dumps
TOZ with buckshot for short-mid range instant kills
MP5 with AP rounds for CQB pay and spray (Unfortunately the offsets make it really hard to work with.)
L3:
Still the OC, because you can't beat a fully automatic in CQB,
Decked out AK-74M with Elcan for backup irons, with HP rounds and nade for ultimate termination if I run into a big group.
Right now I'm swivelling and swapping saves to pick between the:
IZHMASH with buck and slug packs for both CQB and Ranged instant kills
Or
Mosin Nagant with PU for backup irons and extreme long range accuracy, APs for premo long range instant kills,
I'm planning on having every single weapon fully decked and tested by the end of the game to see which one is the best.
Most of these weapons can be found hidden in some pretty obvious but hard to reach spots. Took me a few braindead hours to get any of them, but it's not hard to come out of a zone with a couple of grand.
I love the M4 and it's daddy, the FN-17. So many rails, just enough attachments.
What you take with you should determine how you play - or vice versa. I'm still getting killed, but at least I'm learning - I think. If you take the body armour and helmet you have a lot more durability but you can't carry as much, and you will start getting slower sooner due to weight.
I've tried not using the vest and it works with mimic gunners when I didn't go CQB - I used my 4x on the ACOG and managed quite well from a distance. In hindsight I'd probably take the body armour and helmet for any priority mission, but for the grind I'd suggest going as light as possible. You can also leave the pistol to save weight, or if you're crazy, leave the rifle...
Petition the devs for an underbarrel shotgun attachment!
I like the idea of attachments that I can't blow myself up with.
I miss the SKS. Actually, I miss it's bayonet - otherwise it feels like a clone of the AKM.
As for loadout, I use the pump shotgun up through village, then swap over to an AKM with full kit of dot sight, laser, and suppressor. (it's just not cost effective in the earlier maps). Pistol has been an M9 ever since I lucked out and grabbed one from a box, but before that the Mid-range 9x18 pistol was super fun.
As for long range lategame, I must recommend the DVL-10. It's expensive AF, but the respectable mag size and the massive scope you can mount on it (the adjustable Rail B, 7x-35x) lets you eliminate any enemy at range, so long as you can reasonably stabilize the shot. Also, it makes almost no noise, and you don't need to pay for silencer box repairs.
Also, it shares ammo with the FN-17 I guess but eh. Would rather save up for the SPAS.
Question for the others: SPAS or SAIGA? Haven't bought either yet, and the devs removed the shooting range as far as I can tell.
EDIT: Does anyone use the Groza? I know it has an integrated launcher but it seems... bad? The bore offset is horrific.
I almost prefer the M4A1 to the FN-17. It doesn't do as much damage but it has more clip and ammo drops, just as many attachments and the same upgrades. It also has 10 rounds more than the FN-17 and I don't feel like I'm either constantly repairing or constantly reloading.
I've never used the Groza, it looks funky. The Spas I like. The saiga I like too - it needs more upkeep but if you can find 4 10 rd mags it's great for those times when noise doesn't matter.
The obvious advantage of the Saiga is the reload. At the moment it has one less rail than the Spas, so keep that in mind. You can also find the Saiga and 10 rd clips in the map very late in the game - for free.
Now that shotgun ammo comes in 10s I'm finding more reasons to use shotguns.
I do wish for a shotgun underbarrel attachment. For the nato guns especially, since they don't get to shoot grenades.
