Is it worth repairing weapons before selling them?
Oil is pretty expensive. Not sure if its worth the investment.

Yes it is. Even the humble Makarov sells for $40 in top-tip shape, $20 at 50% and you need to use roughly $2-3 worth of WD40 or less to bring it back up to blue (then do some cost-free bore cleaning if you didn't do a perfect job with the toothbrush). All other weapons give you a better net profit. Moreover, you can refill your can of WD40 in the repair booth for much cheaper at this point if you don't empty it completely. Not sure if they'll remove this, kinda feels like an exploit to me.

The real question is, do you feel it's worth your time. In early game when you're skinflint, the answer should definitely be yes.

The overall return of selling stuff is so low that it is almost not worth at all to sell stuff.
But to answer your question, if the condition is better you get more money out of it. But its realy not much, try selling one of your guns, you'll see.

That is perhaps true for the Soviet handguns (especially when they're rusted to ♥♥♥♥ so you can't repair them manually anyway, those I don't even bother picking up), but you can also find sawnoff shotguns and pishposh SMGs in yellow (or better) condition in fixed places or randomly in crates in the less crazy parts of the Zone which sell for $500 or so at 100%. That's not to be sneezed at for a couple minutes of scrubbing.

I tend to pick up all handguns in yellow or better condition to fix and any long guns if I have slots available. Rifles like the Mosin are still worth selling when they're in the red - they give you a better return than the 2-ish enemy cores they weigh (maybe except slider cores but you would want to keep those for side missions anyway).

repairing them yourself: yes
using the repair booth: no

Repair Cost = (% damage * buy price) / 2
Sale Price = Buy Price / 5

I see what you mean, in that case you are right. But the guns you speak of can only be found once or twice on the entire map. Unlike the pistols you can find constantly, everywhere and always rusted.
The econemy is of the game is bad. if you wanna get somewhere you basically have to game the Mission system in your base. Otherwise you seldom bring enough home to pay for you spendings.

Way too much gun maintenance.

I'd say no, with WD being 300$ a can I feel like it'd only be worth it with long-rifles, and how many of those in yellow condition do you find in the zone?

For pistols you might get yourself an extra 20$ if you spend 3-4 minutes trying to scrub it up to ramrod range, minus the cost of the spray. Not much. And compared against the opportunity cost of running back out to raid the supply depot and coming straight back? Nah.

You use like $5 worth of WD40 for a gun max, not the entire can, and bear in mind you can have the WD40 "repaired" can if it starts to go empty (for now).

I suppose it depends mostly on whether you enjoy or hate the cleaning mechanic. (The mag repairs at the moment are not representative of the intended experience.)

Not sure if I get what you're saying, do you mean it's more worthwhile to farm fragment cores to sell in the depot? I guess it can be, but if I really want to top up my money, I farm artifacts from anomaly clusters and avoid enemies altogether if I can, better returns + no subsequent need for repairs/ammo. (To facilitate this, I put a cross on the mission marker for any artifact missions to denote the clusters. I like the fact it carries over to other playthroughs.)

There's also some 'skill' involved in cleaning the guns efficiently with the WD40. It is expensive stuff and you can find it in the field if you really enjoy looking. Starting out i was terrible at trying to make a profit doing this. Ive gotten a lot better now in terms of using the spray, so it's something players have to get the feel of to really make the profit for it. but as others said, at the end of the day it might be time consuming for some. And like you said, I enjoy it cause it's fairly monotonous between missions but I do find I cant be bothered to clean stuff i plan to sell sometimes if it's gonna require a lot of spray depending on the level and the gun. sometimes the brush and gun are finicky with the geometry lol. you know the guns lol.

Yep, can kill the five transparent fragments with 1 knife, check the north warehouse shelves and the 3-5 bodies scattered about, hit the anomaly cluster just north of it, and get out in the same amount of time it'd take to clean a couple pistols up from yellow. Or at least, the same amount of time it'd take *me* to clean them.

Makes sense, I guess, although that would burn me out big time. I've seen the southern forest and the road toward the depot way too much already.

Didn't realise the warehouse shelves replenished loot. Then again, so do the block post tables sometimes.
