I mean, gun safeties in real life are not really 'used' much either, honestly. I think most guns have them because police/military requirements demand it, but a lot of guns simply don't bother. The only safeties I ever actually bother to put on (in real life) are my AK safeties to keep the action closed.
The logic is this - if a safety is stopping you from pulling the trigger and accidentally discharging a round, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up already. There should never be a situation where that's required. And absolutely nobody carrying a duty weapon is going to have a safety on for the same reason you don't put them on in ITR.
A ton of people off themselves or a friend doing stupid ♥♥♥♥ because they go 'oh the safety is on, I can pull the trigger', and surprise, the safety wasn't on. So proper gun safety is to always treat a gun as if there is no safety.
I've also seen a youtuber playing this game and shooting accidentally while trying to clean the gun. Besides.. you can shoot yourself and damage.
So it is cool it's there.
Also, many guns have multiple firing modes to cycle through and safety is part of this mechanic.
Aside from that its useful for cleaning and immersion but not much else.
It's very much recommended to use the safety and clear guns before stashing them away. A makarov shot isnt that deadly depending on your difficulty. But blowing up 12 nades and 5 noobtubes could be pretty fatal :)
IDK maybe other controllers are different; the Quest2 controllers have a separate grab and fire trigger so gun safety has been a non-issue. Safeties are for undisciplined babies
