Can you perform maintenance on magazines?
I haven't been able to, but you should be. Mags being yet another money sink consumable even when you're careful not to drop them while reloading is kind of a bummer.

Yes, you can perform maintenance on magazines, as long as you do not allow their status to go into the red. Yellow or above, just give er an oil and brush. If it's in the red, it's beyond salvagable without the repair station.

I just did this yesterday with a g17 mag i found in the field - was on yellow and looking about as scuffed as the g17 that came with it. Now both are in pristine condition.

it's really stupid the mags deteriorate when you shoot the weapon. They are made of a spring and a plastic feeder. There's literally nothing that can be broken in the near 2 years of using them non-stop.
It would be much better if devs would change the mag wearing off mechanic, making them more durable when shooting, and much breakable if you drop them on the ground. Which even makes sense

Magazines do deteriorate over time such as the spring becoming less tensile over time and this leads to a higher likelihood of jamming. Also, general wear and tear (dents, bumps etc) can impede the spring. So shooting and dropping the magazines does affect reliability IRL.

dude, there are assault rifles in the russian army that are made in 80's. Their magazines haven't been repaced/fixed since. They still have no problem at all.
(info origin - personal experience)
Inb4 - no, those are not conserved ones. They are being used all the time, for practice at firing range.
Also, while I was serving the russian police for some time, my sidearm PM was made in 1979. Yes, I had to clean it after practice firing, but noone ever gave a dam about cleaning magazines (including me), and it never had any malfunctions.
That's why I'm so sure the magazines will have little to no problems if you handle it properly outside the process of shooting (no dropping to the ground, no dust or corrosive collected in them). And that's why it woud make sense if they would start breaking only if you drop them, or get inside the anomalies

The game doesn't aim at being a realistic simulation of firearms handling.

The mag degradation is simply a way to force the player to perform maintenance of his equipement as part of the intended gameplay loop of the game.

And from this viewpoint it works as intended.

If it is an inconveniance the game provides options to greatly reduce the rate at which equipement degrades.

From personal experience - ex British infantry - our magazines were maintained and whilst I dont disagree that maybe some variants require less/more you specifically said 'mags' - not 'AK47 mags' or 'Desert Eagle mags' etc - you generalised. My point is that some mags do require attention and dirty, unclean and unmaintained mags will cause stoppages in some weapons hence as an ex-professional soldier we maintained them. So much so we never fully loaded in 30 rounds, usually 25 rounds to minimise stoppages, maintain tension on the spring and reduce wear.

well, it actually does lol. Having in mind it has all these weapons mechanics (ballistics stats, various ammo types, fire mode/safety switchers, scopes, suppressors, manual loading, chambering, etc.)

british mags sucks then :D
(joking)
What I referred are PM, AK-M/S/U variants, AN-94, SVD, Pecheneg lmg. Those who carried them never bothered with mag cleaning.
But again, I was talking about proper weapons/mags storage. I don't know how weapons are stored in the british army, but in the russian army you always empty the mag before putting it in the locker. So the springs in the mags are not being under pressure 24/7. (The only exclusion is the guard duty, when your mags are being loaded for a day)

Honestly if we're griping over the fact you have to maintain equipment that, IRL, wouldn't require nearly as much maintenance, we need to consider a couple of things...

1: The magazines don't even need that much maintenance. I've been using the same set of m9 mags for hundreds of hours, and i've never had them at a point where they often jam

2: Despite constant use in the military, magazines will still be cleaned occasionally. Be it a brief shake out of debris and rubbing it with a rag, to a full blown reassembly... most military training involves, at some point, indoctrinating it's forces into the frequent and proper maintenance of their equipment. It stands to reason that this would include a magazine.

3: Just looking around in ITR: not only is there already various anomalies that defy physics and tend to cause a lot of harm to you and your equipment, but just look at the very air around you! Large clumps of dust or ash keep falling around you at all times! Tell ya what, you place an exposed magazine filled with rounds inside of a warehouse that works with timber regularly (as in like cutting and stuff). Leave it there for a week. Then tell me how well that magazine works afterwards. It'd be clogged up with sawdust and would need to be cleaned out to work reliably.

But ultimately, it's a gameplay mechanic to drive home the important of equipment maintenance. So instead of looking at the realism, lets just enjoy the fact that it isn't BOTW's durability system.

Whilst on the subject of mag cleaning can someone explain to me the best way to do it.
I am sure I waste too much spray and am never sure where I need to brush. It seems to take an age (and a lot of wd40?) to get my mags back to full health.

Start by lightly spraying as much of your mag as possible. If you see a sheen, there's oil there, you don't need to spray that spot. Then, lightly rub your brush over all areas with a sheen. The brush will remove the sheen and the dirt, until the magazine is at maximum durability or the sheen is completely removed (at which point, simply reapply oil).

I spray 1 small spot at a time and brush till it stops flaking, repeat till fully repaired

#1 that's what I was talking about lol.
#3 imagine the condition of the protagonist's lungs then :EyelessGhost:
(Inb4 - you don't happen to wear a gas mask 100% of the gameplay time, do you?)
