imo co-op should work this way
-invitation only (to prevent randoms from joining and stealing your crap)
(alternatively you could make it so frozen item exempt from physic are unpickable to the joiner inside the home base)
-max 2 player
-joiner spawn with nothing inside hoster home
-players inventory is either saved in hoster save files or dropped with a marker(like when you die) when they leave the game
-no friendly fire by default (settings toggle)
-if the joiner sell a items to the shop the money goes to the hoster
-repeatable objective are available, any ongoing main story mission will be disabled
-you cannot teleports to a different area/map unless your teammate is near you
alternative 1: give absolute freedom to both players
alternative 2: force the joiner to be teleported to the hoster when the hoster teleports to a different area, the joiner cannot teleports on its own and will hit invisible wall at the border
-both players can see each other on the handheld map
-(optional) proximity voicechat (settings toggle)
the tl ; dr of the multiplayer/co-op situation for this game is simple. never happening.
the devs said in a QnA video a while back that to make the game have more than 1 player would require them to literally rebuild the ENTIRE game as it was built from the ground up with no intentions ever to make it any thing more than single player.
so untill the devs get a bigger team or they make ITR 3.0 or some thing, co-op just isnt happening unfortunately. would of loved to see it happen but understandably so the devs just cant.
I understand and actually looked at those posts before saying anything. But I believe the devs don't realize the true potential this game has. It could easily be the best co-op/single player game ever, and the benefits from it would be above and beyond.
Ah yes silly devs. Thankfully randos on the internet are here to open their eyes.

Only way that would ever happen if a bigger publisher would come in and add more money and devs to work on something like this.
