PS the current best in graphics, refresh, haptic and fov is sitting around 8k + 1.5k per year subscription. It is enterprise level cost and performance.
Headsets get upgrades frequently but the oculus dk1 is still supported and ok hardware, so obsolescent isn't much of an issue.
I was on the fence about VR for awhile now, i felt like i needed to save up for one of the more expensive brands, but then a buddy of mine let me play Alyx on his Oculus Quest 2. I have played through Alyx now, just finished this game, and have a few other random games and haven't had any issues with the Quest 2. For the price tag, its hard to beat what it gives you and its a good way to start gaming in VR. Now if you are the type of person that likes to stir the pot on facebook the Quest might not be the best option since its linked to your facebook account so a ban there is a ban with Oculus.
lol seriously? Thats ridiculous imagine getting a facebook ban then not able to use your VR
Yeah, it was a big hang up for me for awhile, but i rarely get on facebook anymore so i decided there wasn't a real concern. Plus, its the most affordable option, and so far I have no complaints. It tracks well, Oculus Air Link works really well so i don't have to be hooked up to my computer, plus there are some good games through the oculus store even if its not my first stop for games.
I don't think it's fair to just give a dead cut off like that without providing some reasons. If you don't have several hundred dollars to spend on the more high end setups, the Quest 2 is a great way to get into VR on a budget. I'm really glad i didn't just keep waiting until i could afford any of the other headsets because i probably never would of been able to justify it plus purchasing the games afterwards.
For instance, the wire is a big deal for immersion for some people and if you can't deal with the wire or you want to physically turn around a lot without getting twisted, you may need to get a Quest 2 and do Airlink.
If you have a good PC and the wire doesn't bother you, then the Index is the gold standard (it's what I use and it's great). Hand presence is superior in games that support it and the visual experience is convincing and top notch. Tracking is absolutely perfect thanks to the use of base stations (if mounted properly).
Visually I've heard that the Quest 2 has less FOV and so it feels more like you've got "goggle vision" than the Index.
The Quest 2 costs significantly less though, so if money is a serious obstacle for you, it's not to be ignored. It's a $700 difference so it's quite severe.

One quick google search will provide many reasons not to get any oculus product
I asked myself that question and then decided that Carpe Diem was the way to go. I could die at any moment and not lived the awesomeness that is VR. I think VR has matured to a point where there are cool enough things happening in terms of technology and content that its already worth it.
Will things be better in 5 years? YES. But there's also something to be said about discovering the magic of VR in its...teen years?
If you are fine waiting a bit, new headsets are likely on the horizon. From what has been leaked and patented, they could be a massive leap forward, so waiting could be very worth it as well.
