I like them all but yeah Blood is up there as one of my favourites, as you said the atmosphere, soundtrack ect. is all amazing
Just need to wait on the VR mod for this :)
blood have amazing weapon handling mechanics for a build engine game, it has awesome level design as well but character movement is really buggy due to technical limitations of build engine.
quake on the other hand, has one of the best movement mechanics in FPS game from that era. weapon handling is great but also bunny hopping and map design is done so well and allows you to play whole thing like super-mario, without using weapon that much. also multiplayer is solid.
These build engine games and the games from ID Software were challenging and unforgiving, in a good way. They had their own charm that can only be recreated in their engines. And very impressive with all their 2.5D trickery too. It's good to finally be able to relive many of them on modern PC's without having to deal with the chores of the olden days (DOS etc).
Thank you, that's the exact argument I make. I can't really think of anything about Half Life that doesn't bug me and make me strongly dislike it. I think it was the false prophet, to borrow an Ultima subtitle. Half Life 2 in particular, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hated that. I feel the genre's only getting back on the right path recently with Dusk, Amid Evil and Iron Maiden. But I actually think Wrath could be like the real step forward.
On topic, Blood is VERY good. I actually think Quake 2 might be my favourite but Blood is high up there.
Also Blood's level design is definitely the best among all classic FPS games. Tbh all classic Build engine games have great level design, Redneck Rampage or Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior or Blood.
Doom and Quake had good gameplay, but levels were 'gamey' at best. They were essentially as 'real places' as super mario 1-1 world. They simply aren't fun to explore or go through, they are mazes that are just 'there' so you had places where to shoot things.
