GOG or Steam release
What is the difference between the GOG and Steam release of Kings Quest?

The Steam release is identical to the retail version from 2006. The GOG release was made available later and includes a newer version of DOSBox for a greater degree of compatibility with Windows Vista/7/8. The GOG version includes the original AGI version of KQ1 while the Steam release has the SCI remake. Steam only has the 16-bit Windows version of KQ7 and the GOG release is compatible with Windows x64 machines.

The GOG team has continued to support their release with updates while Activision has neglected their version here on Steam since it was initially made available. There are obvious mistakes made with the Steam release preventing the games from being fully playable on Windows Vista or higher but they are relatively easy to fix. Unfortunately, neither release takes advantage of ScummVM to deliver the high-resolution version of KQ6.

Thanks, I won't be bothering with this one then.

THE GOG VERSION WORKS PERFECTLY, THIS NEEDS TONS OF PATCHES WHICH NEVER WORKED FOR ME SO JUST PLAY THE GOG VERSION WHILE RUNNING THIS IN THE BACKGROUND TO KEEP TRACK OF HOW MUCH TIME I SPEND IN GAME. DON'T BOTHER.

For the Steam version, just move the game directory from steam to another shorter, for example c:\games. If you have windows 8, you will be able to play 1 thru 6 using the SierraLauncher.
