How do I save in the first King's Quest game?

Way too late to answer the question, but you can save your game on KQ1 in two ways--1) Hitting Escape to bring up the menu, File > Save or 2) Hitting F5. Either one of those will work for you.

You have to delete a saved game to make a new one.

I can open the save option, but can't save.

it asks what Disk or Directory I want to save to, so I input "C:", it replies with,
" There is no directory named C: "

Don't write anything on it. make it blank and then press enter and you can save.
