Playable these days? Also, the damned scorpion!
Hey folks,

I had a C64 when I was a kid, not an Apple, so I missed out on the original King's Quest games. How playable are they by today's standards? Are they still enjoyable, or are the mechanics too dated?

Also, I did play one of the KQ games on PC in the 90's. It might have been V. The thing I remember most about it was that if you wandered the wrong way in the desert, a scorpion came out and killed you. Does anyone remember which KQ this was?

Thanks for any info!

Sounds like Medusa to me! In King's Quest 3, if you walk into the desert Medusa will appear. If you get too close she'll look directly at you and turn you to stone, so you have to find a way to avoid that happening.

I find the games highly replayable, particularly 3, 4 and 6. However, I did play them as a child so it's possible that nostalgia is playing a significant part in my enjoyment. If you enjoy old school adventure games I'd recommend giving them a go. (Also check out Heroine's Quest, which is a more recent homage to these kind of games and is beautifully done.)

The scorpion was in 5. If you went to an area of the desert with nothing there, essentially going off the map, the scorpion would appear and kill you.
