Art Rage 3 might be Studio, and not studio pro. Besides, there is no guarantee that the regular keys are compatible with Steam. If you were to be able to activate it, it would have to be from the developpers sending you a Steam key.

MattRage has replied on the thread I have linked above, stating that they are looking into thie possibility of allowing existing keys to register on Steam of Artrage Pro 3. But not said for certain, just looking into it for now.

I would be interested in this as well. As soon as I saw that it's available to buy I wanted to register my existing copy. Hope we can, it sure would be convenient.

Here's one their replies regarding to question: "We are currently looking in to allowing existing customers who have a serial number to register their product on Steam but I don't know when that will be available at this point.

Well if you got it before it came out on steam then it's obvious that the key was not generated for steam use as it was generated before hand. Or, like some games such as Assassins Creed, the keys wont work for steam unless you purchase it through steam. With Ass Creed, if you purchase a retail copy, the key will be activated via Uplay which is Ubisofts take on a Steam like program.

me too.

Basically because the program is not steamworks. You'll find that MOST software sold in stores wont' activate on steam even if it's also sold on steam. There's a list of games/software in the support section which will activate on steam, and compared to the number of game son steam that list is pretty small.
