I am really frustrated those past days after I read about it in the game. I played it every day for hours literally for past 4 years. And even if I know that it's pretty old by now and probably don't have that many players and eventually end of service for such type of games will happen anyway... Still, that's really painfull. All those years of playing will be just earased on 30th of August.
I won't be able to see Argo's smile during scouts anymore and hear this catchy music.
I won't be able to participate in Guild and Ranking quests.
There won't be new characters/story events I enjoyed so much anymore.
All this character Limit Breaking and leveling up as well as resource gathering will become useless in a second.
Etc., etc....
And now I am asking myself - when IF and ARS will be closed too? I that will happen in the near future as well, it will be too cruel.
I didn't touch defrag out out of fear remind me of another game. If offline version I would like for collection for sure. They don't give all games offline treatment.
At least for FGO, I keep recording of all story I played for archiving. When all over I turn old I have my recording, and watch them like old man.
Unlikely you will find any official mention of this until a close date were to be announced as then it would potentially have a chance to put some people off of buying things if they think servers will close soon so it doesn't make sense bring it up in an official capacity until its got a closing date.
If they don't change how things are handled though before they were to close servers then things you will loose access to is as follows so far.
1. Coop.
2. All cube related items (You loose them all ready temporarily if you lose connection to server), sao shop, tickets and daily quests for them.
3. Mutated beasts (so no way to get weapon or armour enhancements).
4. Memory Arena and the rewards you can get from it.
5. Wayfarer avatars from other players appearing in your world.
6. Rewards for other people using your avatar.
Everything else I believe currently would stay as they are not tied to a server.
Its about a sao mobile game shutting down live services and what will happen to this one if/when they will do the same at some point as well, plus if anything official has been stated regarding it. That last one is unlikely to happen though until a closing date would be announced as bringing something like that up would possibly serve to make the few people that do buy any mtx feel less inclined to so if they discovered it.
simply because the anime sao alicization isnt finished yet. (atleast from what i seen) its more highly possible that DLC content gets added here. i mean, then makes the monitarisation (the little online shop which alicization has) sense to probably fund future DLC´s aswell etc.
tho the premium one is ... kind of expensive on its own already xwx. but i got told that it is kind of like the 3rd season added etc. so, probably season 4 when it comes out will probably get added too etc.
if anything gets anti cheat removed and the game (atleast for co-op) will continue to run over the steam server service ... which is kind of horrible ... >_> steam servers are always horrible O.O!
Doubtful EAC would go. its still up in FB after all. As for steam servers well that's possible but the game has been a massive flop. Would they bother doing something like that or just pack it in and close up shop for online in a pretty much dead game? I have seen other games like battleborn where rather than doing something like fully convert to using steam servers they just close it down because the playerbase is so low they just don't bother trying to keep it alive after a few years.
1. Co-op is peer to peer, doesn't run off servers, so they technically won't shut down, all SAO Games have run off peer to peer connections.
2. Cube items are a different thing all together, but they are all also stored locally too and can temporarily be cheated using memory modification but the second you enter a load screen the game does a server check and switches the value back, and you lose the costume.
3. Mutated Beasts and the rewards they drop can easily be swapped to an offline solution, the rewards from it are already client side (the S, M and L Shards) can all be found and abused using memory modifier programs and can change any offline item into it, by simple switching the memory value to shards, which means the devs just have to permanently unlock mutated beasts at all times and take them off a server rotation.
4. Memory Arena coins are the same as Mutated beast rewards, all data for the coins are stored locally on the client side and game files and can easily be obtained with 0 internet connection, they just have to make the quest able to be done offline taking it off a server rotation.
5. Wayfarer issue probably would be the only thing not done locally or client side so far.
6. Likewise rewards for people using your wayfarer would have to be redone as well.
What you assume is they would change how things are handled when shutting down for the player's benefit alone. I wouldn't be so sure of that as they don't seem to care for player's benefit when actively working on the game. I have seen online service games with single player elements close before and simply do nothing for the player's benefit in single player or worse just close the whole game down so its not playable at all.
I did say "If they don't change how things are handled though before they were to close servers then things you will loose access to is as follows so far." OFC if these things are changed how they are handled pre closure then all of them could be made to fit in without using the servers at all but the point I was making was about how they are currently setup which you seem to have missed entirely. The only one I could be wrong about is possibly Co Op because I never played it due to it requiring the garbage anti cheat resource hog that it is to be accessible so I assumed it was also tied to servers in someway like the rest are.
I hate the idea of making a game live-service when it really fake at that. I don't hate expensive dlc for costume since DOA 5 and 6 does that got over it, but I value keeping the stuff I bought. I understand gacha games does close service thing, but I can respect that enjoyment it bring and fond memories in the end with friends I played with. This game I question was it enjoyable since mostly single player game and grind wasn't meaningful.
I do as well, I assume they'll probably do some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like oh when the games live service ends, pay $20 to upgrade to a complete edition and get all the cube outfits and weapon skins included, and don't require an internet connection, and a big middle finger to everyone who bought the skins with SAO Coins and such.
Similar to how most gacha games work if they release an offline mode, the whales/spenders still get screwed over.
