From what I just did. If the quest has a WiFi symbol over the quest it can be completed online. (It does not matter if you are the host or not.) Progression will be saved when you go back to your own game.
I could be wrong, but I believe a majority of the main story (after chapter 1) can be progressed together online. The only thing is you will have to accept and turn in the quests independently. (You can do this in a world where you are not the host.) You will also need to be by your friend when the quest is initiated. (Seeing how you can go anywhere in the world without your friends)
It is suggested that you have your friend with the least amount of the story completed so that you can progress together.
Not sure where Dead S.n.a.k.e got his info. Chapter 1 only took me 6 hours. That was with completing side quest and other side objectives. The 15-20 hour mark is based on if you actually watch all the cinematics and read all the dialogue. It would have probably taken me an hour or 2 if I didn't choose to do side objectives. It's not that bad.
