No, not at all

You might actually be able to appreciate it in a different way having not seen the anime.

But this has no relation to the other games - other than the over arching theme of SAO

thanks..so i understand that story is self contained ..is it multiplayer heavy meaning is it focussed on mp because i dont think SAO has a healthy playerbase in terms of MP

It is 90% singleplayer - Multiplayer is completely optional, but if the other games are anything to go by you'll always find multiplayer matches - even in like 4 years (You just need to join a community discord or something similar)

All I'll say about the story , just for basic understanding
Kirito is a guy from our world - he is in a game - However, the people in the game have souls, they aren't NPC's , they don't have physical bodies and don't know they're in a simulated world.

Thats about all the context you really need.
Kirito has grown up in this world (entering the world as a child) - time is much faster relative to our real world time.

this is the first game that stays true to the original story (all previous games deviate from the main story)

Fatal bullet is also somewhat of an odd-ball as it takes place during the GGO arc but doesn't realy stay true to that story either. and even then, in FB you play as a whole new character (and meet new and old characters wich you can take with you)

Also, the anime still has to release it's second season. dunno how long it takes you in the game to reach that point.

oh, and there's a game exclusive character that doesn't appear in the anime/main story (i don't think this deviate the story all to much)

so, it's safe to jump into this game without having played/watched the show (though knowing the story up untill now could be helpfull understanding what is going on)

No, but you might want to play the others just to play it safe, plus unless you can brute force this with a beefy PC, you should probably wait until they update the game later in the month, which is when the performance and technical issues in the game is most likely going to get fixed

Fatal Bullet - uses Guns
Hollow Realization - is the best SAO RPG fantasy before this

You just need to know snippets to get the lore
I got mine from the [Alice is Darkness from Konosuba] memes

For those of us who read the light novel or watched the anime (or both) you really don't need to know those stories to really understand this one, since the original script is so heavy in exposition that you're getting a lecture on what the world is and how it works at a constant rate.

There are moments that the game makes obvious to the player that "this is where it diverges from the original." You might be able to pick up on those moments up because of the dramatic effects used for it.

But really, no, you don't need to have seen the anime or read the light novels or have played the other games before. The only thing you REALLY need to know is that the the studio that its design framework is rooted in handheld RPGs (PSP and PS Vita), and it's made plainly obvious in any game they have that's been ported to console or PC. Expect the jank and the whole "this is actually a visual novel with gameplay" thing going on while you're following the main story quest.
