Both players can't be in the same server. Any workaround?

Yes. You can do +set net_port 28961 (not +set net_port 28960) added to a shortcut.

They was trying to tell this person here, but ended in some frustration: https://community.callofduty.com/thread/100215623

I've done it before. Port number has to end in 1,2 or 3 like above. It can't be on +set net_port 28960 because 0 is default and both of you are trying to use the same port.

Thanks, we'll try it.

Nope.

It's worked for me in Co-Op so I figured it was the same for zombies since they use the same type of lobby system.

Sorry for the 4 year necro, but I found a solution that is not really mentioned anywhere. Generally following the instructions on this site is the way to go: https://portforward.com/call-of-duty-world-at-war/
This website goes in depth as to what you are really doing and explains how to port forward and find your IP and anything else that is basic. My guide skips all of the "obvious steps" if you have port forwarded in the past.

Before really getting into it, this guide only applies to people attempting to play with 2 or more players on a single router, but also have 1 or more players on a different router all trying to connect to a single server. If all players are on the same network and you are not trying to play with anyone else on separate internet connection, WaW has the native function to just play LAN games without any hassle.

I also recommend that one of the players who share a router be the host of the game, as I do not know the stability of two LAN players connecting to the same host that is not on their network. This also raises the question of how stable 2 LAN players connecting to 2 separate LAN players on a separate network functions, and to that, I have no idea. If that is the situation for you, I recommend all players follow steps 6 and 7 despite what step 5 says.

  1. Anyways, I entered my router's gateway IP into the URL bar in my browser and went to the "Port Forwarding" section.
  2. I then began filling out the page with information. I am going to assume you have port forwarded something on your own in the past or at least now how.
  3. If you can, choose TCP/UDP for Service Type. If you can't, only pick TCP and make the start port 28960. If you need to fill in an end port, also make that value 28960.
  4. Next we need to forward another port. This time make the Service Type TCP/UDP again if you can, but otherwise choose UDP. For the start (and end) port use 3074. Fill in everything else with the same exact information as the TCP port you forwarded previously. (Service Name doesn't matter at all, but I recommend naming it <custom name> 2 or <custom name> UDP to keep track of it.)
  5. After that, I'm not entirely sure if steps 6 and 7 are necessary but I already did these steps before hand while trying different "fixes", and they worked out fine for me. At this point, just try and see if you can play before continuing. In the case that they are necessary, these steps only apply to the people who share a router (I'm about 90% sure of this), so the player(s) that are on a separate network can probably safely ignore these steps.
  6. On the computer that is hosting, I went to the Steam Library>WaW>Right-Click>Properties>Set Launch Options and input
    +set net_port 28960
    .
  7. On the computer that was not hosting, I did the same thing but used
    +set net_port 28969
as the Launch Option. Repeat this step for all other players on the same LAN trying to connect but with a slightly modified port. To reiterate from earlier, if all players are playing on the same network and have 0 players joining from a separate network, you do not need to manually set a port.

Notes
As I tested new things, I slowly incremented the launch number, so precisely port 28969 may not be necessary but I am too scared to try and "fix" something that isn't borken. In all likely hood you are able to use just about any port you want other than port 2896"0" or any other forwarded port on your router.

Some people also state on other forums that people trying to connect can't use the ports 2896"0" through port 2896"4", but I- my self- don't know if this is true on any level.

I can confirm this works and you need to do step 6&7 to make it work. it's really simple took me less than 10 minutes to finish and test. thank you

Old Call of Duties are nearly completely crippled these days. There appears to be some kind of arbitrary cutoff date for when you bought the game that seems to determine whether you can play online or not. Your best bet is to use hamachi and attempt to LAN play, or download the Plutonium Launcher [plutonium.pw] to play- which is the superior option in my opinion. You still need to own WaW, but you launch using the Plutonium custom launcher. From there, idk how to do it, but I'm willing to bet that there are YouTube tutorials on how to connect and setup servers. Best of luck to you
