online modes are still alive in 2021, but the community isn't as big as it used to be. btw, in case you've played WaW on consoles in the past, I must say multiplayer on PC is played in dedicated servers where admins may customize the match settings, and manually kick/ban if somebody violates a rule (or cheating). certain customized rulesets could indeed be tedious for some players, especially those who prefer vanilla gameplay without any weird restrictions. some examples to such server rules are; crouch-only, no camping, no martrydom, no rifle grenades, tank maps only etc.
I'd say there are ~ 15 populated servers and ~ 150 players total in multiplayer modes at any time. numbers may go up/down depending on hours of day, or if it's weekend/holiday etc. servers are usually hosting team deathmatch and sometimes free-for-all; so rest of the game modes are often dead (except zombies which is by far the most populated part of WaW). cheaters are actually rare, and it's possible to enjoy fair games, especially in servers where admins patrol frequently. most servers are located either in north america or europe, so if you wish to play WaW mainly as multiplayer, you can just avoid buying if you live in regions like oceania or south america where community is too small.
you might check the server list of WaW in GameTracker, to have a general idea regarding the playerbase. in-game server browser actually shows some more servers, so I guess the reason they aren't visible in Gametracker is due to being modded/cracked.
