also remember that controllers don't work on menus for this game, so you should test it during actual gameplay. to navigate game menus, you'll still need keyboard and mouse. when WaW was released in 2008, controller support for shooter games weren't common on PC and almost nobody cared about it. but considering today's gaming trends, it could indeed seem as lazy work by developers. if you have future plans about online gaming on PC (especially competitive first-person shooters), then I suggest you getting used to playing with keyboard and mouse as soon as possible.
as for controller support for CoD franchise on PC;
- call of duty 1, 2, 4, Modern Warfare 2 & 3 don't support controllers on PC at all, but you can still benefit from some third party software to use your controller while playing them.
- world at war and black ops 1 support controllers on PC, but they don't work while navigating the game menus. controller customization is also limited, compared to console versions.
- from black ops 2 onwards, all CoDs fully and natively support controllers on PC, but I guess aim assist (common feature on consoles) was initially introduced in black ops 3's PC version.
