CoD WaW Error during initialization: Unhandled exception caught
I bought Call of Duty: World at War in 2012, and it worked on my same terrible laptop ever since. This morning, however, when I try to play the game it gives me this; "Error during initialization: Unhandled exception caught" The game was working fine last night, I was playing custom zombie maps, like I usually do. I've looked it up online, and tried all the solutions that 15 different websites had, I tried uninstalling it, deleted every file that has to do with the game, tried the 24 bit 48000Hz (Studio Quality). "fix", tried running it in compatability mode for "Windows XP Service Pack 2", none of which worked. It doesn't load with either the singleplayer or multiplayer, but I only get the error with the singleplayer launch.

The error code is as followed:

----- Initializing Renderer ----
execing ragdoll.cfg from disk
----- Client Initialization -----
----- Client Initialization Complete -----
Trying SMP acceleration...
...succeeded.
----- R_Init -----
Getting Direct3D 9 interface...
Pixel shader version is 3.0
Vertex shader version is 3.0
Shader model 2.0 code path is available.
Shader model 3.0 code path is available.
Using Shader model 3.0 code path because it is the best available path on this hardware.
Attempting 1024 x 768 fullscreen with 32 bpp at 60 hz
Game window successfully created.
Using 4x anti-aliasing
Creating Direct3D device...
Com_TouchMemory: 0 msec. Using sum: 0

Error during initialization:
Unhandled exception caught

I'm starting to get really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off, because I really enjoy this game, and I can't play it anymore. If anyone has any other suggestion for a fix I haven't yet tried, I would love to hear them.
Thanks in advanced: Lucky Fur

Right-click your game on steam and click Properties>Local Files>Browse Local Files. When the explorer window pops up go to DirectX and run DXSETUP. Report back with any further issues.

I tried what you suggested and after it finished, I loaded up the game and got the same error. Thanks for the suggestion, is there anything else I'm doing wrong?

Well, for one, you are running the game on Windows XP. Maybe it's time for an upgrade...

No, I'm on Windows 7, I think I'm still on compatiblity mode. I'm gonna try running it without compatibity mode and try again.

So I turned off compatibility mode, and I still get the error.

Make sure all of your drivers are up to date.

K, I'm about to go out, I'll update my drivers when I get home, thanks for the help.

Ok, I found out the Emerson Flatscreen TV I use as a monitor, isn't entirelety supported for the game, so that was my problem. Which is strange because it was working (not very well) last night. I feel quite stupid for not thinking of it before, but thanks again for the support, even though it was a user error. :steamfacepalm:

One last thing you might try is to verify the integrity of your game cache.
Launch Steam.
From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
Go to the Local files tab and click the "verify integrity of game cache" button.
Steam will check the game cache and replace any files that don't match the proper file signature (i.e. corrupted files).
