Call of Duty: World at War

installation is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, help.
Steam Support simply refuses to help with WaW, and Activision's site doesn't show a damn thing related to World at War, so I'm turning to the community to help.

So, I got a new PC and I tried to install World at War on there. It worked, yea, it directed me to make a new account and I was fine with abandoning my old account(s), it is what it is. But the game crashed, and I booted it up again. But here's the problem, it says that I have 6 accounts. Those accounts are the 5 accounts I created on the installation on an entirely separate PC (I changed aliases and I always created new accounts when that happened, until I decided to just stick with one alias) and the new installation's only account. The game is hardcoded not to allow 6 accounts, and whenever I open the "Profiles" menu, it crashes adn gives me an error, saying that the integer "dw_users" (Which is the number of users allowed) can only go up to 5.

"Why don't you just delete the extra profile in the AppData folder?" I did. I'm on Ubuntu using SteamPlay, so every game has it's own "simulated" AppData folder. I literally uninstalled the game, deleted the whole AppData folder for World at War, removing all the players, and still, it behaved as if I did absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nothing.

check cod: waw's pcgamingwiki page, especially the section with "missing profiles".

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_World_at_War#Missing_profiles

at clause 3, it says "name it whatever you want", but if that didn't work, you can name as one of your profile names you used in the past without problem, and then apply the clauses 4 and 5.

the profile issues happens often, especially to those who have created many online profiles or who simply try moving their retail DVD profile names to steam version. I've even heard that new purchasers of the game on steam can have more frequent problems on this, compared to old purchasers. anyway, I hope you sort it out in a way. good luck.

Well i did. I just ported all the players - including the active.txt file, which was missing in my installation for whatever reason - from the old PC to the new PC. it was that simple.

I think the steam version of WaW usually doesn't recognize the profiles created from retail DVD versions. it's likely that due to different keycodes assigned for different copies of the games. afaik, there's a setting at multiplayer options of the game, where you are allowed to edit the keycode. I guess the keycode looks as blank at game menu of steam's WaW, but it could be somewhere in regedit of windows.

if nothing else worked so far and you have no methods to try, you can put your retail game key into the blanks where keycode can be switched. "perhaps" once quiting and launching the game again, WaW may remember your old account's details. before trying this, you'll also need to cancel the read-only setting of active.txt file (if you did while trying the method in my initial post), so that it doesn't prevent the game from applying profile data you've created years ago.
