The first time I beat him I managed to get a purple rifle and pretty much just whittled him down while spamming Mandragora roots and ice wall everywhere.
I've also beat him with an axe/demon lord build, but it had a lot of sustain and extra health so it was pretty simple.
Conserve your blinks as often as possible. Don't use them for likes like positioning in the optimal range to deal max damage with Gauntlets or Spears unless you can manage to stun or root your enemy or if you have items that will let you readily replenish your blinks.
You can also just keep playing through a few times and keep getting Soul Gems so you can permanently boost your stats. I recommend Mostly filling out the shopkeeper trees first though, you especially want to invest in the one the makes Bosses drop extra Soul Gems as soon as possible. A full run through 3 floors usually nets me some 2k+ gems.
1) The lass boss Phase II and III "100% physical absorption" is perhaps a poorly worded "melee absorption" because he would regen health from my ice axe. Don't melee him at Phase II and III.
2) Any source of damage advances the break counter, this included familiars, ground effects and spells. More about that later.
3) As some figured it out, Frozen Knight familiar can easily combo down a boss by using his 2 spells in sequence. Freeze the ground first, use the icicle spell (which converts every frozen tile into 1 hit) for a possible 9 hit on the boss.
4) The boss can't be moved around, this means Mandragora wind spell will stun him instead.
5) My familiar of choices for him are Mandroga (2 stuns) and Frozen Knight (damage, breaks)
6) I picked full Lighting on the "rune floor" for the chance of paralysis. Perhaps there are better optiosn but this worked for me.
You'll find 4 so that means you can max out 1 element and have 1 point in another.
I really like the Blast tree because it provides a flat damage boost which is nice but if you're seeking a melee build it might not be the best since the explosions it triggers with tier 3 hurt you as well.
Flexing 1 point in the water tree isn't too shabby if depend on normal attacks but don't have any familiars or relics to apply drenched to the enemy so it can irregularly give your attacks a 50% damage boost.
Though I agree that paralysis is probably a much safe option since it lets you get in hits basically for free. Even when I have plenty of health restoration and shield generation there's certain forms that smack you around like no one's business.
Water form's rifle attack is no joke, I made a point of basically never being straight across from them while they're water because it's an easy 120+ damage whenever I've been hit.
