I think instead of your sentry getting a shield while in use it should multiply your sentry gun's firing rate by 1.5

Stats:

+When aimed at anyone,shows how much health they have,their weapons and what their weakness is (e.g. Scanning spies show that its weakness is a Pyro & headshots etc.)
+Can "over-scan" and can paralyse your victim for 3 seconds
-Doesnt act like a Wrangler
-Can only use three times and not on the same person
-Can affect teammates

Maybe this could be a spy protection or locator gadget for secondary, draining 10 (or more) metal pr second active, and scrambling nearby spys cloak (also friendly)

Stats: Replaces secondary.
If it hits a disguised spy, the spy's cloak will emit particles for several seconds.
While cloak is shown, all crits will be crits/mini-crits

Stats?

+Able to turn on and off your sentry
+Able to arm explosives (AKA the mvm bomb so the next bot that picks it up goes skyward)
-When Sentry is off it takes 50% less damage
- When active the sentry takes 20% more damage

Sentry targets enemies in the beam's path intill enemy is dead or out of the beam's range. unlike wangler it does not have shield, cooldown or autolock. Movment speed decreases as beam is fired.

I have an idea.

-Sentry can't be controlled
+Scanner takes 5 seconds to find disguised spies after fired.
-Uses metal for ammo
-On fire -20 Ammo

Take manual control on your Sentry Gun

+Sentry Gun detects cloaked enemy Spies while deployed and pointed on them
+Shows with the opposite colour when a player is a disguised Spy
-Cannot fire and alt-fire with Sentry Gun when deployed

Only for scan and detect enemy Spies without wasting Sentry Gun ammo/rocket and metals.

Here is the flaaw about it being a spy scanner, the engie would have an easier time just shooting the spy. But maybe if it identifiy a spy from a long distance it would put a mark over the spys head allowing everyone to know that a spy is there.

it could be a hybrid of Wrangler and Solemn Vow.
It can wrangle your sentry and lets you see enemies' health, but sentry doesn't receive shield or rate fo fire boost while wrangled.

It would be cool to add a scanner. It could do something like take several seconds to scan someone, and while it's scanning you can't change weapons or attack. Then, if it's a spy, the disguise can be removed and the spy can't diguise for a set ammount of time.

My idea: Engineer scans players that he suspects are spies from long distance. The beam can go through all teammates, unless they are disguised spies. Of course then this means it has to use metal for ammo, in order to nerf it.
When scanned, the spy hears a faint zapping noise, similar to that of the Razorback but quieter. The spy is then "barcoded" and can be recognized by sentries UNLESS they re-disguise. And of course, re-disguising may give away your position. Well, there's my idea Valve. Put this in. Now

it could actually be a very interesting weapon. Nothing anti-spy mind you but something for example when pointing at a wall it allows the sentry to detect enemies behind the wall that way the sentry will not be taken down by peek shooting and while the beam is in effect the sentry stays in alert mode and sits quietly to avoid detection, in other words, makes the sentry far more deadly at the cost of metal which the device would use per second. Another thing it could allow your dispenser, when pointing at a teamate, to heal them at a few feet range. This in turn would only be available with a level 3 dispenser and the heal rate at range would be of a level 1 dispenser.

with the vector projector you can tag an enemy and your centry is going to attack that tagged person. you know like, instead of attacking the first person that runs up to it you can decide who to kill first... could be a good alternative to the wrangler.

@DR spyro, my only concern with having a stun more than a second as well as being able to use it more than once without grabbing ammo makes it too easy to stun someone almost nonstop and beat them to a pulp/have your teammates beat them to a pulp, melee reduction or not.

Yeah, Koma. I was more thinking that it'd be an item that you'd use to pick your fights with an enemy when confronted, and if they happen to be low on health then you have enough time to recover from scanning to begin attacking, as well as a very breif vulnerability for them against other players, specifically spies and snipers. Though, I put the stats in mind so you can't simply gunslinger/souther hospitality then to death so easily with the melee decrease and time period. If they happen to be high on health, you could zap them then run around a corner before they can get a rocket in. Perhaps this'd also be better if it cannot be fired unless it's a direct line of sight to the enemy, so missing doesn't obliterate your metal supply for no reason.

If this thing is ever to be put into the game, I think Iceball here has a realistic idea of what it's stats should be. One of the important things about your suggestion, which I liked very much, is the idea of making it too costly to be spammable. In my opinion, this item should be more of a tool to alternate your playstyle than a tool to make the engineer's job easier than it is already. Remember, TF2 should not contain direct upgrades.
