Move the Mods Folder
Av myfist0
With SSD's becoming more popular, people are asking, "How can I move the folder with all the mods to a different drive?" Well, this is very simple with system links that is built into windows.

Moving your mods folder to a different drive
I use system links, or mkLinks in the CMD window. Orginal info from HowToGeek[www.howtogeek.com]

As Sins of a Solar Empire loads all of the needed assets on game start, this will not affect performance. If you are moving from a SSD, it may slightly change the load time.
This tutorial is for Windows 7, Vista will be very similar.

Step 1:
Cut you folder from the original path, mine is ...

C:\Users\myfist0\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion

Step 2:
Paste the folder in the new drive, my extra drive is F:\ so my new mods path looks like ...

F:\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion

Step 3:
Now, the game needs to looks for your mod path in its original directory, and the folder is no longer there, so we will fool it into thinking it is there with an mkLink.

Open the CMD window

Start --> Run --> CMD

or

Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt

An Administrator privilege is required. If you are not on an Admin account, you can right click the icon shown below and
"Run as Administrator"

Step 4:
Edit the line below to suit your paths, first path in quotes is where the mkLink will go, the second path in quotes is where the folder is now actually stored (where you moved it).

mklink /J "C:\Users\myfist0\Documents\My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion" "F:\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion"

.png]
You can manually type this line into the CMD prompt, or paste it in and press enter
(right click > Paste. ctrl+v does not work).

Once you have pressed Enter you should see the CMD window change to ...

.png]

You should see "Junction created for..."

Now you should have a mkLink in the original mod paths folder where the game can look and find your mods.

Take my points! This works for Win10.

For Win11 users according to

elevenforum. com/t/find-all-symbolic-links-and-junction-points-in-windows.4225/

the CMD link isn't mklink like Win10, it's Slink or slink - So change mklink to Slink - I don't use Win11 so not entirely sure it'll work and I'm not knowledgeable in that stuff but if it does GG and the Advent demands you make way for the Prophecy.

Just... change your default document location to somewhere else. Load up Explorer. Right click on your documents under Quick Links, Click Properties, click on the tab in the new window call Location.

Change it.

I was able to use this after my Sins of the Prophets was saved into my PC's OneDrive. Worked the first time and allowed me to move it to an external drive. Thanks for the easy fix!

I was able to use the same process as this link and did a regedit. Mods folder moved and so did all of the Documents folder which I prefer:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-can-i-stop-windows-from-default-saving-files/19c947ac-8ddf-4fed-abda-edf22883d28e

Basically run this command under regedit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Find the line that talks about %\Documents and edit it to your liking. I pointed mine back to the local user\Documents folder.

I hope this helps someone.

I was pondering for a long time about how to move Mods folder into new location. Few days ago found this page that solved it & now my Mods folder is on 2TB Nvme drive :) Much easier to do than this above ^^ Dont' be alarmed when you see that default location still displays the space that folder's content takes. It doesn't as all the content is in the drive where you moved the folder. You can confirm it by checking via file explorer --> this pc "default drive's remaining space" & by clicking properties on default "documents" folder.

I can send couple screenies later on this week as proof if you need it. Wish all good times with OS drive that can breath more easy when have many bigger than 1gb Mods in the Mods folder :hearter: I did this with Win10 Home x64 & not sure if works with all pre Win Xp OS'es. I assume it does work. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/moving-your-personal-data-folders-in-windows-vista-the-easy-way/ #mods #default #location #move #goodtimes

"cannot create this file when the file exists"
delete the Ironclad Games folder, then the command will remake the folder for you and then link it
