Overview
In this guide, you will learn how to use our Importer to import your own assets into our game. Before we can start off - lets have a look on a few main points you need to keep in mind.

  • Asset Importer is in early stage and things may change.
  • Currently only .OBJ files and .MTL files are supported.
  • Diffuse and Normal textures are the only supported textures.
  • A maximum of 8 sub-materials is supported.
  • Only .PNG (including Alpha) and .JPG textures supported.
  • Imported assets and textures will be stored in .BIN files and can only be used in Golf It!
  • Maps which are using custom assets are required to be on the workshop for other people to join.
  • Multiplayer editing with custom assets is not yet supported.

Loading .OBJ files
To open our importer you need to press on "Editor" in the Main Menu and then "Importer".

In the first instance, you will see a list of all assets which are inside your Importer-Folder. The path to this folder can be found next to the refresh button.

If the folder is missing you can create it by your own. Your assets will appear in the list by dropping them into the folder and hitting the refresh button. Because this is an early version, the result can defer depending on your exporter. Please note that 1 unit equals 1 cm in-game - make sure to scale your model accordingly.

Here you can see an example for the export settings in 3ds max:

Here you can see an example for the export settings in Blender:

Some necessary steps are:
  • Triangulated Mesh
  • Z-Up
  • X-Forward
  • 1 unit = 1 cm
  • .MTL should contain map_Ka or map_kd for diffuse and map_bump, bump or norm for normals
  • .OBJ should contain v, vt, vn and f

Here you can see an example on how the MTL file should look like:

As stated before things might not work directly and you might have to re-export or tinker with the files itself for now. Please keep in mind that this in an early version.

Now the only thing left is to click on the asset you want to import. If everything went well you should now see the result on your screen.

You can navigate the scene by using WASD and the middle mouse button.
Material settings
On the left side of the screen, you will now see the detected materials. In this example, it's only one material with a simple diffuse and a normal texture.

When you click on a material the Material Properties Menu will open, where you can select a few options.

When you're happy with your material settings you can close the window and proceed with the next material. As soon as you're done the only thing left to do is to press the Import button.
Using Imported Assets
Now you are free to use your custom assets inside the editor. You can find them inside the "Custom 3D" tab.

Have fun making your dream maps! <3

Finally got it working, Any model over 1MB takes 10 years to load in though and gives ZERO progress.

Been trying to get textures to import properly for the past day and cannot seem to get it, They are just black and white squares. So much potential with this as well.

Does this functionality still exist / is there any way to bring custom assets into maps?

@cherilbruner Relaunch the game. For some reason they only show up when you first launch the game.
