Description
Update: Now requires you to buy an item at the Infinity Express for new characters!

Allows you to set bookmarks via quests.
"[...]I don't see why we would need a mod for this." - a wise person

Once you've bought the Infinity Express's item, it'll gives you a quest that'll never disappear (well, unless you uninstall the mod). When you "abandon" it, it'll give you another quest that you'll be able to track to return to the position you were at, using the quest compass.
For planets, it also store their celestial coordinates (although this might not be really useful since you can already use the "show quest location" button in the navigation console).

It also ties in with the Memento Mori (but it isn't required): when you have it in your inventory, a trackable quest to your death's position will appear. Once you get there or if you abandon the quest , the quest will disappear, and your Memento Mori won't glow anymore until you die.
(The Memento Mori's included in Frackin' Universe - If you're using this, it'll be all the same, except that the Memento Mori's glow will only stop once you change held item.)

Appart from the addons thingies, this mod is "vanilla/multiplayer compatible". Once you get the item at the Infinity Express (either on local, or on a server with this mod), it should work seamlessly on vanilla servers, as quest scripts are client-side. The infinity express simply won't sell the item on vanilla servers, and attempting to spawn it there will result in a Perfectly Generic Item.

I'm contemplating the idea of adding something to teleport you directly to your bookmarks.

If you have any idea or feedback, please feel free to post it.

Inspiration comes from this: http://community.playstarbound.com/threads/mod-request-compass-gps-to-mark-critical-areas.120442
And as quoted at the top, this mod's more or less useless since flags are OP.
(Edit: it's also an old silly idea, there might be better "marker" interfaces mods by now, I haven't been keeping up with things)

whatever that was fun to make

(Sorry for the pic's poor quality, I'm too lazy to try and retry to get nice ones)
(Also sorry for the terrible name, that's the first thing I thought)

could this be used to track players?

This could be useful on Missions, if you have something like a favorite chest. Before I learned how to mod or even use admin mode, I farmed pixels from this specific chest that would have a mask that sold a good price.

Also, it would make the 'return to earth' mod easier

(There's currently (2019-06-19) a starbound bug (on the 1.4.1) that displays quest prompts that shouldn't be displayed, sorry for the annoyance! Can't do anything about it, waiting on a fix from chucklefish :CatWish:)

Ah yeah, if the server doesn't have the mod it won't show up in the shop, since the shop's list is handled server-side (but the mod itself will work fine, since all the scripts are client-side). I thought I wrote that in the description, sorry :KittySkas:

I was on a server when I noticed the item missing now that I think about it, so I went to single player and it worked fine. I probably should have thought about that.

@Sarelth: how does the mart' changes? Just new items? The way I patch the item in shouldn't be subject to any incompatibilities unless another mod straight-up replaces the shop's config file instead of patching it too

You could check which modded items are in the shop and figure out which mod they come from; or you can just go into admin mode and spawn this mod's item directly

Love the mod and had no problems with it till recently. One of the mods I am using modifies the Infinity mart and the questmarker item is not in the list. I am not sure which mod changes the store. Any help would be appreciated.

That's how it works; when you abandon it, it stays in place but also makes a new "bookmark" quest.

when i abandon the quest of the original BookmarkQuest as it tells me to, it doesn't abandon and i don't get some option to make a new quest or whatever..... Is this broken?

Can you implement a mod in the same way, but for when an NPC gives you a quest, it stores the coordinates of the planet the NPC is from? Sometimes a bunch of NPCs give you a "please grow this crop that takes 90 years to grow and bring it to me" and you leave the planet to actually do that, but then can't remember which planet of the plethora of markers you have the NPC is from.
Thanks.:steamhappy:
