Step 1
You will need a short notification sound of your own with the extension of WAV (.wav file). You can get a lot of sounds by a google search.

Once you have your sound file ready, rename it according to your need:

message.wav - to replace the sound played when you recieve a message.
friend_online.wav -to replace the sound played when a friend becomes online.
Step 2
Open the Steam friends folder, usually
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\friends

Drag your .WAV file in here and replace it with the existing one. You can make a backup of the original file you are replacing if you would like to revert the change in the future.
Step 3
To prevent Steam from overwriting our custom file on future updates, we will need to disable file verification. If you have Steam to start up when you boot up your computer, you will first need to disable it first. Once you have done that:
  • Find the shortcut you launch Steam with
  • Right click the shortcut file, choose properties
  • Select the "Shortcut" tab on the top
  • Add "-noverifyfiles" at the end of the "Target" box.
  • Hit OK.
Once you have done, it should look like this:
Step 4
Restart Steam. If you have done everything correctly, your new notification sound(s) should be working!
