Introduction
This is a guide to all of the achievements in The Gallery - Episode 1: Call of the Starseed. While not a walkthrough, per se, it will cover most of what you need to do to complete the game. Because of the nature of the guide, some spoilers may occur.

While some of the achievements are "missable" in the general sense, since the game is short and you can easily restart any chapter, it's simple to go back and complete the ones you missed after completing the game for the first time.

The achievements are sorted by the section of the game in which you can get them, except for a pair of "Collectible" achievements which span multiple levels and have their own section at the end.
Tutorial
The tutorial is very straight forward and you'll get two achievements for completing it. First, part way through you will get the

Sticky Fingers
You get this achievement for picking up four items, which you have to do just as part of the tutorial.

At the end of the tutorial you will also get the achievement:

Tutorial Completed
The Beach
The first major part of the game occurs on the beach, and many of the achievements can only be found in this level.

Beach Completed
Complete the Beach level.

To complete The Beach level and get the achievement, there are a few main steps you need to do (note spoilers below):
  1. As you enter the beach area, you'll see a metal box raise up on a bunch of lines. Ignore it for now. Turn right and head through the ship to the area by the campfire.
  2. Go past the campfire, past the tent, and then head into the cave (picking up the flashlight and following additional tutorial instructions as you go) and up to the main level.
  3. Read the note and listen to the cassette tape. As it suggests, pick up an object and throw it at the metal box above your head to knock it down. Pick up the flare gun and flares from the box.
  4. Head out to the balcony. You need to shoot three different bells with the flare gun. The first (and hardest) is on top of a pole near the shipwreck, left of the lighthouse in the background. The second is lower to the ground, on a buoy, more-or-less directly between you and the lighthouse. The third is behind you, just to the right of the entrance of the cave. Note that you can also get the "For Whom the Bell Tolls" achievement (see below) here if you hit all three with a single clip.
  5. After shooting all three bells, head out of the cave, back past the fire, and through the ship you first entered. Remember that box that raised up when you approached? It is now lowered and you'll find a door handle and another cassette inside.
  6. Note: the next step will end the level, so either get the rest of the beach/collectable achievements for proceeding or plan on reloading later
  7. Go back through the ship then go through the entrance to the right to a metal fence and door. Use the door handle on the door, open it, and watch the cutscene to end the level.

The Beach (extras)
These are all optional achievements that can be gotten on the beach. The first parts of the collectible achievements (see below) are also found here.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
Shoot 3 bells with one clip.

This achievement involves the first real puzzle you have to solve. To advance out of the beach you have to shoot three different bells with a flare gun. The gun is in a box in the cave above your head (as suggested by your sister's advice, throw an object at the metal box to knock it down and get the gun and first clip).

After you get the gun, head out to the balcony, where you will find a box with more clips. To advance the game, you need to shoot three different bells with the gun. This achievement, however, requires you to hit all 3 with a single clip (a clip holds 3 shots).

You want to start with the most difficult bell, which is high up on a pole, next to the shipwreck, a bit left of the lighthouse in the background. It'll likely take you a number of attempts to figure out the angle. In order to get the achievement, you'll need to hit it with the first shot of a clip, so if you miss with the first shot, just keep practicing with the other two. Even if you hit it with the 2nd or 3rd, retry with the first shot in a new clip.

The second bell, is to the right of the first one, lower to the ground, on a buoy in the water, more-or-less directly between you and the lighthouse. You need to hit this with the second shot. Should be substantially easier. If you miss, take a new clip and go back to the first bell.

After hitting the first two with the first two shots of a clip, the third is right behind you, just above and to the right of the cave entrance. You should easily be able to hit this to get the achievement.

Prometheus
Start a fire on the Beach.

On the beach, you will go through a shipwreck and find a lit fire. Take a piece of driftwood from the ground and hold it in the fire to set it to flame. Then go forward past the campfire toward the tent. In front of the tent is another, unlit firepit. Put the lit driftwood in the firepit to light the second fire and get the achievement.

Brain Worm
Hold the radio on the Beach for three minutes.

The radio is next to the first campfire on the beach. Pick it up and just hold onto it for 3 minutes for the achievement to unlock (you can pick it up and hold it in your off hand while you walk around and do stuff with your other hand).

I believe the time does not have to be contiguous, so if you drop it you can pick it up again without having to start the timer over.

Mitchel Jordens
Sink 5 volleyball shots in the Beach hoop.

On the beach by the campfire is a small ball. On the side of the shipwreck by the fire is an old basketball hoop. The achievement requires you to put it through the hoop 5 times. I found this to be fairly hard to control, but it also unlocked before I thought it had gone through 5 times, so what it considers a success may not be the same as it visually appears to be.

Lights Out
Douse 6 candles.

There are candles scattered all throughout the beach area. The only way I've found to put them out is to drop them into water, but not just any water (e.g., throwing one into the sea didn't work). If you go back to the start of the area, where the raised box is, you may notice you are wading through water at this point. Dropping the candle hear will snuff it out. There are about 3 candles right in this immediate area, and many more in the upper cave area by the tent. Snuff out six and the achievement will unlock.

There are candles in some parts of the other levels as well, but this is easiest to complete on the beach.

Light It Up
Light 5 fireworks.

The first three fireworks (essentially roman candles) are in the beach area at the beginning of the game, near the first fire. This achievement is cumulative through playthroughs, so if you miss it on the first one, you can go back and add to your total just by returning to the beach and lighting a few more.

For a single playthrough, the fourth and fifth fireworks are in the upper sewers (the second part of the game) in the area of the wishing well. You can find it marked on the map you'll come across shortly after you enter the sewer. Basically, as you go into the sewer system and follow it around, when you get to the first actually fork where you can go in multiple directions, turn left (toward the overturned shopping cart) and follow the path until you see a hole in the wall followed by a chamber with a bucket hanging through a hole in the ceiling (the bottom of the well). The last two fireworks are on the platform near the bucket.

From Whence They Came
Return all the starfish to the sea.

There are six starfish in the beach area, all of which have to be thrown into the sea to unlock the achievement. To throw them into the sea, go to the fence next to the tent, which is the one place you can easily toss them into the ocean.

The locations of the six starfish are
1-2. Next to each other on the right hand wall, right after you leave the starting cave, before you reach the metal box which gets raised away from you.
3. On the right hand wall when you pass through the shipwreck, after the box and before the lit campfire.
4. Outside the tent.
5. Inside the tent, toward the back.
6. Inside the cave on the shelf just opposite the top of the stairs.

Ocean Lullaby
Spend the night in the Beach tent.

This achievement is fairly crazy and very buggy. It literally requires you to spend 7 hours "sleeping" in the tent. Some people have gotten it by just lying down in the tent for a few minutes (which isn't supposed to work), while others have failed to get it after 7 hours of actual sleeping because they found themselves drifting or teleporting out of the tent. A bugfix may solve this issue.
The Sewers
You get this achievement for simply working your way through the upper part of the sewer.

When you first enter it, turn on your flashlight, go forward and listen to a brief conversation, turn right go down and find a tape and map on a crate on your right.

Go forward to the intersection, and follow the path until you hit the first fork where you can actually make a choice. To your left is an overturned shopping cart, ahead of you another fork. Head forward and look down and to the right. You should see a green arrow pointing through the rough passage on your right. This is the direction you want to go.

Follow it forward to the barrel with the fire. Turn right and follow the path around until you come to another crate with another tape and a note. Keep going forward and you'll come to some stairs. Go down them and forward toward the hatch ahead of you. When you reach it you'll go into a loading screen and the achievement will unlock when the next area is loaded.

Lower Sewer Completed
Complete the Lower Sewer level.

There are no level-specific achievements, but there are parts of the collectible achievements on this level, as well as a few fireworks and candles that can contribute to those achievements if you didn't complete them on the beach.
The Lair
There are two primary tasks. First walk toward the front of the platform and listen to the man ramble on. Eventually, he'll start tossing vacuum tubes at you. Grab one out of the air (it'll break if it hits the ground) and stick it in the panel on the left, next to the lever. Repeat this until you've gotten all three in. At that point you can pull the lever and an elevator will appear. Get on it and pull the lever on it to be lowered down.

Once you get down, get off the elevator and circle around the platform. The guy will eventually kick down a bridge for you. Walk across and start collecting the various electrical components outlined in blue, as well as some cassette tapes. Eventually the guy will tell you to start the water wheel. Turn right from the bridge and see a station with two levers. One moves the bucket/wheel left and right, the other backwards and forwards. Manipulate these until the bucket is in the stream of water flowing from on high and the wheel will begin to spin.

This will cause the board behind you to short-circuit and the components to spit out. Go back to it and start placing the components you've collected into it. Some of them have to be placed back before others (the diagram on the left of the circuit board has some hints). The components are color-coded to the wires, so it's a fairly easy process.

Once it's all working again, an elevator on the far left will open. Go get onto it and wait for the cut-scene to end, you to descend, and the achievement to pop.

Lower Sewer Completed
Complete the Lower Sewer level.

Again, there are no level-specific achievements, but there are parts of the collectible achievements on this level.
The Lab
After going down the elevator, you are presented with the containment unit and the machine. Lots of stuff is floating around, including a cassette tape. Walk around the platform and up the stairs, where you will find a large circuit board.

In order to open the cage, you need to fill all of the spots on the board with vacuum tubes. Tubes come in two value: 5 and 10 (the 5 are yellow/green and shorter, the 10 are blue and longer...you can see the number on the base). Tubes are floating around everywhere and can be picked up, or you can get the tube fetcher device on the table to the left of the circuit board and use it to fetch them. Just point it in the general direction and pull the trigger and a bunch of them should come flying at you. Sometimes they'll disappear when you try to pull one off the device. Also...try not to point it at your panel or you can pull tubes you've already put in place off of it.

The trick with the panel is that there are 4 bars blocking the path and each has to have a specific value of vacuum tubes in its path (you can see the paths by tracing the different colored cords from the bottom to the top). There are clues about what values you need to get scattered around the room, but the values, from left to right, are 65 60 55 65. If you've having problems figuring this out, see the extra solution below.

If you're having problems solving the vacuum tube puzzle, there's a really easy solution. Place one with value 5 in any slot that only covers a single wire, and one with a value of 10 in any slot which covers multiple wires.

Once the bars are all lowered, you can open the door to the containment unit. Pull your half of the locket/hexagon thing (from the very beginning of the game) out of your backpack and put it in the slot.

Once the elevator rises get onto it and enjoy the view as the achievement pops.

Laboratory Completed
Complete the Laboratory level.

The last pair of cassette tapes are on this level, so see the collectibles section about their location.
The End Game
This is mostly one long (very impressive) cut-scene, although on two occasions you will have to interact with the panel in front of you (just put your hand into it when it opens up and shows you a hand) and toward the end (after the long speech from the person you meet here is done) you have to point your hand to the stuff above you and pull the trigger for a few moments. The cut-scene will continue into the closing credits and the achievement for completing the first episode will unlock.

What Is The Starseed?
Complete Episode 1.
Collectibles
There are two achievements which involve "collecting" items scattered across multiple levels in the game.

Long Time Listener
Listen to all the tapes in the game.

You get this achievement for finding and listening to 11 cassette tapes scattered throughout the game. You have to listen to them all the way to the end, so if you have all 11 and the achievement hasn't triggered, try relistening to them one at a time. The locations of the tapes are as follows:

The Beach:
1. Inside the cave, on a table just at the top of the stairs, next to a written letter.
2. On the workbench in the room just past the first tape.
3. Inside the metal box near where you started the level. You'll only get access to this after solving the first puzzle.

The Sewers
1. On a crate on your right as you wind through the entrance part, just down the ramp after the encounter with the professor, where you find the map.
2. On another crate on your right as you wind toward the end of the level.
3. When you approach the hatch at the end of the level, head over to the left into the deeper water and garbage. It's on top of a mattress near some floating paper.

The Lair
1. Down on the ground, underneath a tire in front of the elevator controls at the start of the level.
2. On the table in front of you when you first cross the bridge to the center section (after going down the elevator).
3. On a shelf by some of the electrical components.

The Lab
1. This one starts floating in the air in front of you when you first get off the elevator. Because it's moving around, sometimes you may find it on the ground on the upper level as well.
2. Inside the drawer to the left of the circuit board/control panel.

Bottled Fury
Smash 15 special bottles. (Secret)

You get this achievement for breaking 15 special bottles found in the game. These bottles are larger bottles with "Rum" written on them. There are 5 on each of the first three levels of the game.

The Beach:
1. On the bench at the start, next to rising metal box. There is another similar sized bottle there that does not count toward the achievement.
2. Under basketball hoop (throw the ball at it or use the flare gun).
3. Just inside entrance to cave, go under the hanging rowboat and find it in the rowboat.
4. Sitting on the cliff outside one of the windows in thecave (in the open area to the right of the workbench, where there is a stool made from a stump). Shoot it with the flare gun.
5. From on the balcony, turn away from the water and look at a pipe with a grate over it sticking out of the wall behind you. It's inside the pipe.

The Sewers
1. In a pipe above your head, just past the first cassette tape and map (throw something at it or get one of the fireworks from the wishing well, along with the lighter, and shoot it).
2. When you hit the area where you cut through a rough, natural passage (there is a green arrow on the rock, pointing the way on the lower left), head left instead to a dead end. It's floating in the water.
3. After passing through the rough passage, you come to a barrel with a fire in it. The bottle is on the ground behind it.
4. When you get to the final part of this level, before heading down the stairs toward the hatch, you can find this bottle on top of a pipe above your head. Easiest way to destroy it is with the fireworks.
5. The last one is hard to find. After you go down the stairs, before approaching the hatch, it's floating somewhere in the water, probably on your right. It drifts around so it's not always in the same place. You may hear it banging around, which at least lets you know its there. I've found it down there twice, and failed to find it once.

The Lair
1. Immediately to your left at the start of the level, inside a tire.
2. On the roof on the right, across the gap where the professor is throwing things at you from. You may need the flashlight to see it. I found this to be the single hardest one to break. Once the professor starts throwing things at you, place the first tube in the elevator controls. After that, ignore the tubes he throws and try to throw hammers, teapots, skillets, etc., at this bottle. Eventually you should manage to hit and break it.
3. From the same spot as the last one, look down and to your left. There is a large pipe with water coming out of it. The bottle is sitting on the lip. Again, use the items the professor is throwing at you to throw at this one. I found it substantially easier to do than the last one.
4. After going down the elevator, before crossing the bridge the professor kicks down, it's on the ground next to a barrel.
5. After crossing the bridge, the last bottle is just sitting on a shelf on your left.

Not sure if it's a new achievement, but Mother Blinking Natural is missing from the guide. That said, it's pretty straightforward. From what I can tell, having Vection Fade turned on or off doesn't seem to make it any quicker to Blink.

Similar to at least one previous commenter, I found it easier to get the bottles at the start of Lair using a loaded flaregun I brought from the beach. That said, you can't bring extra shells and there's no way to reload the checkpoint so you only have three shots and then you have to play through from the beginning again if you want more.

It's worth noting that the bottles and tapes do NOT have to be collected on the same playthrough, and a tape flashing in you inventory does NOT mean you haven't listened to it.

I can confirm you can use chapter select to find bottles that you missed. All the bottles will still be there, but if you need a specific one (I needed the one in the water that did not spawn), just reload the chapter and break it.

Nice guide! noticed these errors: you have duplicated the description for both sewer achievements, also the description is confusing for bottle 2 in the sewer level, the green arrow rock is on the lower right* and it should say ''ignore it & head straight instead to a dead end. It's floating in the water'' instead of head left as that path takes you to the bucket + fireworks

The balcony is the spot where you can find the flare gun and extra flares. As you step out of the cave and onto the balcony, the water is to your right, the beached ship is roughly in front of you (and maybe a bit to the right if I recall correctly), and there is some sort of wall to your left. In this wall is the end of large pipe with a grate on it. The 5th bottle is sitting there. You can shoot it with a flare.

I know where other "Rum" bottles are located in the beach. Are I want to know is, where's the 5th bottle in the Beach? It's just I feel confused about the balcony. I may also need a video, or screenshots for "Rum" bottle locations.
Awesome Dude Jul 12, 2020 @ 4:51am
Well, even to this day this guide is still helpful. I was confused why those two bottles in the Lower Sewers/ "Lair" were so hard to reach, when all the others were easy to destroy with the materials provided and fairly easy to spot.

And for the "Vacuum" puzzle: I found the clue on the Electromagnet and the clue on the Note on the wall of Monitors behind the puzzle along with the Tape telling you that the third one is 55, but I never found the fourth clue. Not that it matters when the bottom of the electromagnet has the solution for some reason.

Overall a good game with some confusing elements, and I'm glad that you wrote this guide to help those of us who didn't know what to do.

Can 'Long Time Listener' and 'Bottled Fury' be done over multple plays or do you have to do in one run?
SIR_Thomas_TMC May 9, 2018 @ 4:21pm
Thx for this tutorial, still helpfull!!

Exactly what I needed, thank you!

For the long time listener achievement, I think the tapes that you have not listened till the end blink.
Otherwise, Ocean Lullaby is a real pain because your headset will idle after a while. I am not sure I can get this achievement. :fscared:
