"The U.S didn’t have much in the way of a lightweight machine gun come 1917, so when it entered the war, the U.S forces were issued with French Chauchat LMGs. The U.S later developed the m1918 due to a series of issues that were commonly faced by soldiers within the front lines. Primarily, the open sided magazine (which had been a major issue for French soldiers in the mud of the trenches) was replaced with a boxed magazine and a conversion to accept .30-06 rounds.

The M1918 will be used by U.S marine squad by the close combat support role. The .30-06 round gives a slightly different performance from the french m1915 chauchat. The fact that it was frequently ditched by troops in the field because of jamming will be reflected in the fire rate of the weapon"

IMO the M1915 8mm Chauchat should get improved hipfire accuracy, slightly improved rate of fire (real Chauchats had an RPM of 250, or about four rounds/second; it's currently a little slower) and one-shot kills through sights (keep two-shot hipfire kills so as not to overpower it as a trench weapon). It should be noticeably better than the M1918, which should be functional for the sake of the game, but not desirable except as a last resort (or second-last resort; it still beats melee attacks! And if nothing else it at least provides *some* modicum of automatic firepower), or unless players want a challenge.

The M1918 gunner should have a good sidearm with something special enough about it to give an impetus to use that class specialization, since once they get the BAR (assuming that's the step-up) there would be no reason to ever use the M1918 Chauchat again.

Again, just my opinion. :)

You might also mention we were supposed to use the damn lewis gun, but the director behind our guns had a personal vendetta versus lewis, so we got issued these things...
