By now, just by not killing the Joker, the body count is just rising.
if he start killing, he won't stop, he even mentionned it multiples-times and you can actually watch it unfold in the "Mask of the Red-Hood" interractive movies
if Batman, of all-peoples, started killing, he wouldn't fucking stop,
because it's very, very easy for him to get to his enemies, and while it would be fine for the worst kind of peoples,
once you start cutting the bad-weed, you might end-up going overboard with it and cut anything that look bad.
if Batman dosn't kill, it's not because he feel like it's immoral,
but rathert because he dosn't want to end-up as the "Punisher".
nothing wrong with "Punisher", i love that character, but they don't have the same objectives,
one is hell-bent on doing the "dirty" job because otherwise no-one else would do it,
the other-one want to be both an inspiration for the city he live in.
The Joker is a repeat offender sociopathic killer. No one, not even the joker would blame batman for killing him. Batman's biggest problem is his abject idea on morality, his refusal to set aside his own personal comfort and ACTUALLY do what's needed to protect people.
After the day Batman realized joker could not be redeemed was the day he became responsible for the Joker's murder spree. After all, he caught him, fought him, arrested him. And yet he keeps escaping and murdering again and again. They really needed to lock the Joker up in a state like Texas or Kansas.
