What does your Master do for you?
Your Master will teach your character specific abilities at various levels of the friendship bar.

Masters will reward you with a Skill
  • When you accept them as a Master and complete the first trial
  • At the friendship bar being 25% filled, and completion of the second trial
  • At the friendship bar being 75% filled, and completion of the third trial
  • At a full friendship bar, and completion of their fourth trial

Masters will reward you with a Z-Soul
  • Tier 4 Z-Soul upon completion of their final trial
  • Tier 5 Z-Soul when they offer to spar you, which has a chance to drop along with the Tier 4 Z-Soul during the sparring match and successful completion of the spar.

Masters also have a chance to give you an item reward when you speak to them after every PQ or storyline completion. I highly recommend you speak to your Master at least three times after each PQ because once I was given an item reward, the next conversation gave me a fetch quest, and the third conversation was a trial.

As mentioned, some Masters will also ask you to do a fetch quest, typically using the mixing station to make something or to bring them a reward from a PQ.

Furthermore, your current Master has a chance to show up during a PQ to assist you in battle.

Finally, you can freely switch Masters whenever you wish, all gains and progress is saved, but this does not mean they will appear in Toki Toki city when you want them. Only two Masters can spawn in Toki Toki city at a time, your current Master and a potential Master.

Unlocking Masters
Please note
Masters can appear before you meet the level requirements, when you speak to them they will say to come back when you meet that level requirement. Goku, requires level 70, he can still appear in Toki Toki city upon completion of the Demigra Saga, but he will not accept you as an apprentice.

  • Goku - Beat Demigra Saga - Level 70 Required
  • Piccolo - Beat Saiyan Saga - Level 5 Required
  • Krillin - Beat the Saiyan Saga - No Level Requirement
  • Vegeta - Beat Saiyan Saga - Level 8 Required
  • Gohan & Videl - Beat Buu Saga - Level 40 Required
  • Captain Ginyu - Beat Freiza Saga - Level 15 Required
  • Frieza (1st Form) - Requires Completion of Captain Ginyu's Training - Level 20
  • Android 18 - Beat Android Saga - Level 34 Required
  • Cell (Perfect) - Beat the Cell Saga - Level 30 Required
  • Hercule - Beat the Cell Saga
  • Gotenks - Beat Buu Saga - Level 40 Required
  • God of Destruction Beerus - Requires Completion of Goku's Training - Greater than Level 70
  • Tien - DLC Pack #1
  • Yamcha - DLC Pack #1

Z-Assist
Z-Assist is when you use your Master's Ultimate ability in battle while they are your current Master. It will boost your damage with that ability and add a special effect to the Ultimate animation.

The Friendship Bar
To view the Friendship bar you will have to:

Open your Menu and select Play Data

Then turn the page until you find the below window

The Four Bubbles to the left of each Master's portrait indicate the ranking of each of the trials that you have completed for that specific Master.

The vertical bar to the right of each Master's portrait shows their current Friendship level.

How do I fill the Friendship bar?
  • Complete PQ's
  • Additionally completing PQ's with one of their character specific skills
  • Completing Storyline Missions
  • Participate in PQ's that feature the Master or the Master's enemies
  • In Offline PQ's bring your Master along as a part of your team

After working on completing all of the Master's friendship bars, I have found the quickest way to fill the bar is by equipping one of their skills on my custom character, adding two versions of my Master to my team, and completing PQ01 as it only takes 25-45 seconds to complete.

Your progress saves even if you switch your Master, so do not be afraid to try a different Master.

Spawn Locations for Potential Masters
After the completion of any PQ, Battle, Storyline Mode, Game Restart, or Master Trial there is a chance that a potential Master will spawn in one of the below areas.

Please note
  • The locations shown are potential spawn points for a potential Master
  • Only one potential Master can spawn at a time in Toki Toki City
  • Any Masters shown in the below screenshots are not limited to those spots
  • All Spawn locations can have any potential Master spawn
  • There is not a set location a specific Master will spawn, the location and who spawns is all random
  • If you accept a potential Master as your new Master, he/she/them will not move to the Current Master location until you refresh Toki Toki City via PQ/Battle/Story/Game Restart

Your Current Master will be located at the below location upon completion of a PQ, Battle, Story, Game Restart, or Master Trial.

Spar Details
Requirements to unlock the sparring session with your Master
  • Filled Friendship Bar
  • Completion of Final Trial

Your Master will then have a chance to offer you a sparring session after every completion of a PQ or another completion of one of their trials through the Train one more time option.

When they are ready to spar you, they will have a green question mark above their head.

They will then offer you three options

These options are
  • Spar - Initiates the Sparring Session
  • Train one more time. - Allows you to replay one of the trials for the item / EXP / Z rewards.
  • Maybe another time. - Closes the dialogue.

When you select the Spar option you will be shown the PQ window with an attached reward window.

This shows that there is a chance for the Sparring session to reward the Tier 5 and Tier 4 Z-souls, items, EXP and Z. The Z-Souls can drop during the sparring session, upon completion, and sometimes the Master will give you another one during the conversation at the end of the sparring session.

Sometimes you will have to spar your Master multiple times to get the Tier 5 Z-soul to drop.

@Hellfire
You have to make sure you have completed Gohan & Videl's fetch quests before they will advance to the final trial. If you have already completed the fetch quests, please make sure you are bringing along gohan/videl on PQ's and have at least one of their abilities equipped.

Going to quote the guide

"After working on completing all of the Master's friendship bars, I have found the quickest way to fill the bar is by equipping one of their skills on my custom character, adding two versions of my Master to my team, and completing PQ01 as it only takes 25-45 seconds to complete."

It is just completion of a PQ with a Z rating that moves the bar quickest. Thank you for your information.
zeromaveric Apr 13, 2015 @ 2:48am
@Yureina: i've read in message boards that the quickest way to level up masters is the quantity of quests you complete with them in your party. most people just bring their master along on the 2nd pq since it's one of the fastest missions to complete, even though it's mainly used for farming dragonballs
Yureina Apr 12, 2015 @ 8:25am
...continued

My new characters are bringing the masters with them to the PQ's everytime (Gohan/Videl, Goku/Goku, Gotenks/Gotenks), but are not using any of their skills. It' still a grind, but it has noticeably quicker than how it was before.

It may also help that I am getting high ratings on these PQ's (A, S, Z) as well. This is all really nebulous to me, as is much of how this game works regarding item drop rates. But... I think I might have hit upon something. :D
