Walkway is the name of a popular Team Fortress 2 singleplayer training map.

It originally released August 2009. It has since then received updates. The newest version, Release Candidate 2 came out December 2009.

So what is Walkway?

Walkway is custom map commonly used to practise various movement or shooting based techniques within Team Fortress 2. It’s also sometimes used for testing custom weapon modifications on bots.

Walkway is made up of 3 main areas: the control room, the walkyway itself and the sentry room.

The control room is a room straight ahead from the red team’s spawn. This room functions as a way to control a bunch of aspects of the map. Buttons line the walls. All of them straightforward in function. Players can see what a button does by standing in front of one as doing so displays descriptive text on screen. Buttons are activated by damage. From this room players can control thing like the gravity in the map, however most buttons pertain to settings for the bots on the walkway.

The walkway is the main focus of the map. It’s a huge indoor path. Waves of bots usually continually run down it. Similar to the control room, the walkways has buttons. These buttons control the terrain of the walkway, add an optional launch-pad, stuff like that. On the side of the walkway is a counter that keeps track of bot kills and the total number of bots that made it to the end of the path. The point of the walkway is to parities things Team Fortress 2 using the bots as surrogate players.

The sentry room is located beyond the door on the right in red’s spawn. Just before entering the door is a button. This button is used to toggle between bots running the walkway or bots being made available for the sentry room. Ideally players should use this button if they wish to use the sentry room. The sentry room is also very straightforward and simple. From an over-handing control room, players can control a marker. This marker, in conjunction with the available buttons is used to spawn in engineer buildings, simple walls and engineers. Players use these controls to custom-make whatever sentry nest they can think of. From this point players can practise destroying the things they set up.

Some of the mechanics found on Walkway are only possible due to cheats. The map automatically enables cheats when run. This applies to servers too. Under usual circumstances a risk is presented by having cheats enabled on a public game. For this reason some servers that run Walkway take precautions and disallow clients from using some command. It’s common for Walkway to simply be run privately on password protected servers.

One noteworthy aspect of Walkway is that it contains numerous hidden secrets, or ‘Easter eggs.’ None of which are shown or described here. (The fun of hidden secrets come from finding them out firsthand.) This is just a note that quite a few exist.

Walkway uses an intuitive command and alias system. Basically wile on the map, players can use the console command: tr underscore help to view a list of all the map-specific commands. These commands perform tasks such as teleport the player to set locations. Most of them do tasks that could otherwise have been done by interacting with a button on the map. The benefit of using command is that the player can use them anywhere on the map and it’s possible to bind keys to command. Some players who invest a lot of time on Walkway might build keybinds to string together a list of commands. Something like a preferred setting for bots when sniping can be made to be a single button-press away.

Walkway also features more advanced scripting tools, only really accessible to dedicated players due to being fairly unintuitive.

One aspect of Walkways is that players must make their own fun. Given all the options available to customize the map players have come up with their own minigames within Walkway. Online resources exist for people to discuss and share these minigames.

And that’s basically Walkway in a nutshell. An excellent tool to hone one’s skills.

If you really want to know an easter egg, here's a hint: Look after the power ramp.

At one point Valve made it so maps can't run commands. This map uses commands to spawn in bots and stuff. Use the console command “sv_allow_point_servercommand always” (quotation marks not needed) before loading up the map. Also make sure you play the map after starting TF2. The reason is TF2 likes to remember settings from the last server you were on so if you played on a casual mode server and then load the map it screws up and goes into a weird 'waiting for players to confirm' loop. So ya, it's best to play the map after starting up the game and use the command.
