Introduction
So, you're reading this guide for probably a few reasons. First of all, it might be out of curiosity.

It is currently, in this day and age, to use controllers for PC gaming in general. However, with Steam Big Picture mode in effect, a door of next-generation gaming has opened up to you. One of Valve's hit games, Team Fortress 2, is among one of them.

In this guide, we will cover how to enable controller support for Xbox and PS3 controllers.
Enabling the 360 Controller
This part of the guide is for those who want to use an Xbox controller for use with Team Fortress 2.

For Xbox 360 controllers, you can either use a licensed product or a well-built third party one, such as a cheap MadCatz 360 controller, which I use. However, if you are using an official product such as the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows[www.amazon.com], which you'll need to install the drivers. As for the MadCatz controllers, it should install the drivers as soon as you plug it in, as long as you aren't using Windows XP.

After installing the drivers, you'll need to calibrate the controller. To do this, type run in the search bar accessible by clicking the Windows button (Win. Vista & 7) and typing "joy.cpl" inside the run window. Afterwards, select your controller and click Properties.

Select the Test tab first, and try out every button on the controller so you know everything is working well, so this will prevent any mishaps relating to the actual controller if not checked.

Next, go to the Settings tab and click the configuration button. This will start the Configuration wizard, which will calibrate your controller, as it will walk you through identifying and correctly calibrating each button and joystick. After that, it should be ready for use in Team Fortress 2! (Programs such as ShowOff [www.donationcoder.com]will put a small white overlay window on your screen that simply reports every button press, whether it’s from a keyboard, mouse, gamepad, or other devices.)

In Team Fortress 2, it's time for usage. To enable controller support, there's two ways. One is that Team Fortress 2 might already detect the controller and asks if you want to use your controller. Click "Yes" of course, and it's able for use. However, if the option is not popping up, you can enable your controller through another way. This way requires something called the console.

Enabling the console is easy, as all you need to do is go into your options, advanced, and click Enable Developer Console. Afterwards, you need to type this command into the console : exec 360controller. If you want to undo this, just type exec undo360controller. Now, you are able to use your Xbox controller for Team Fortress 2! Have fun!

Enabling the PS3 Controller
This part of the guide is for those who want to use a Playstation controller in junction with Big Picture Mode and Team Fortress 2.

The beginning steps for actually plugging in and making sure your controller should be mostly the same, except you'll need to do this :

After doing those steps stated in the video, repeat the steps in the previous part in order to calibrate and configure your PS3 controller. Now, it's time to download some stuff to make this work.

First, you'll need to download a program called MotionInjoy[www.motioninjoy.com] . After downloading it, run it. Make sure at this point your PS3 controller isn't plugged in at this point. Now, after connecting it, click on the option Xbox 360 Emulator, then click on Driver Manager, which is on top.

If you have UAC (User Account Control) on, and a message pops up after "Driver Manager", just click on Yes. Next, just click the box to check off near the USB name, and click on Load Driver.

Next, go to Profiles and click on Enable.

At this point, the controller should now be working. Launch Team Fortress 2 and use the same two console commands stated in the previous part and it should work now.
