Short warning
Be wary that there will be minor spoilers as to the actual things you can unlock, but I have withheld from any story spoilers. This is just a list of the games "secret" unlockables, not a guide to where in-game items are, such as various cleria ore, armour, and gem locations.
"Getting the obvious out of the way"- Unlockable Character
As anyone who has beaten the game at least once knows, by beating the game (as any character) you unlock "The Claw". This is done just by beating the game with either Yunica or Hugo. Without trying to spoil, this character reveals a lot of lore unfindable in the other paths, and has some plot twists (including ones relevant to more than just the story) that make it well worth playing.

"And you thought you were done"- Arena, Time attack, & the 'bonus' shop
By beating the game with every character, you unlock multiple bonuses:

Time Attack:

Not much need to explain what a time attack is. You may choose a boss to try and defeat with any character on any difficulty and see how fast you can do it, or to try 'Boss Rush' and do every boss in order and see how long it takes you. You can also see the world leaderboards to see what rank you are (though some parts of the leaderboard have been hacked with people beating bosses significantly faster than physically possible in the game) compared to others.

Arena mode:

Arena mode allows you to fight a set of monster waves, based on various stages from the actual storymode. There are a total of 6 arena's (with a bonus one which will be discussed later), though you only unlock them one at a time. You start off with only the first arena, featuring monsters from the first few floors in the story, but by beating the arena, you get "SP" as a currency for the bonus shop (which will be explained after). The harder the difficulty of the arena, the more SP points you get.

Bonus Shop:

Here, you may use SP that you obtain from arena mode to buy various upgrades. Each arena stage (save the first) must be bought from here. In addition to this, you may purchase "Adol" (the main protagonist in other Ys games, this one in particular being the version from Oath in Felghana) for a set amount of SP. However, this character may be used only in arena mode. More of the bonus shop will be brought up later.
"And I would do it again if I could"- Character EX versions
By unlocking Adol (Oath in Felghana) from the bonus shop, you also unlock the ability to purchase 3 more characters- Yunica EX, Hugo EX, and Toal EX. These characters, unlike Adol, can be used in the actual story mode, and are required for later unlockables.

The differences between these characters are quite minor, and are as listed:

Yunica EX:

-Wind attack has 3 'mini' blade extend outwards, do minor damage
-Lightning hammer has slightly larger range, releases miniature "shockwave" from where it lands
-Pheonix attack seems to be... Larger? No noticable difference, please correct me if somebody knows the difference

Hugo EX:
-Eyes of Fact act differently. When wind is selected as main attribute, they will be at his side as normal. When lightening is selected, they will follow behind him in order of where he goes, in a 'string' fashion. When fire is selected, they will circle around him.
-When lightning mine is planted, you may continue to use your regular attack, and lasers will shoot out of the mine in the direction it is facing

Toal EX:

-Wind attack leaves behind minor trail of fire
-Lightning claws range noticably extended and the magnetic pull from lightning claws is much more dramatic and noticeable
-Fire tornado unleashes mini-tornado's in a trail, dealing minor damage

On top of this, by unlocking all 3 of these, you get the ability to purchase Adol's "EX" form (just Adol from Napishtim). This is, again, not usable in the story (but required for one other unlockable).
"And all they gave me was a Swinub"- Unlocking Pikkardon (arena 7)
By unlocking all 6 arena stages and beating the game on Nightmare mode with every character (EX character's DO count), you unlock the ability to purchase 'Arena 7'. However, this particular arena is different from the rest. There are only 2 waves.

Wave 1:

A bunch of "pikkard's" spawn. They are extremely weak and easy to kill, and drop boatloads of SP. On Nightmare, they will drop around 400k.

Wave 2:

The boss, Pikkardon, spawns. This boss can be quite difficult, ESPECIALLY on Nightmare, if not done properly. He will go everywhere, unleashing lasers and minor balls of death that would make Touhou fans cry, all while spawning armies of more pikkard's and dealing insane damage, unless he is held under control. However, he can be defeated easily if you learn how to do him properly. One good way to do this is to go on Toal (preferably in his EX form), and when he is stunned from one of his attacks (or if you can attack him before he attacks you), start mashing away at him and stunlock him. If done properly, you can just keep wailing on him and using your lightening attack to make sure he doesn't leave his place. If he does, just do it again. He should die eventually, and will drop a significant amount of SP (over 200k on Nightmare, totalling up to over 600k).

This boss isn't all that relevant to anything in the game, but is needed to unlock something later.
"Teddy Bear's, Battle Axes- Basically the same thing."- Yunica's outfit
This is the final unlockable in the game. By beating the game with every character on Nightmare, as well as beating the game with every character's EX form, and having unlocked everything in the bonus shop, you will gain the ability to purchase your final reward that you spent so long working to get-

Yunica's schoolgirl outfit.

I don't know why either. You get the outfit, and your axe is this little chibi cat teddy bear thing (though the crimson lotusblade you get from your father's ghost later on is still a sword, except it is white instead of red and a different weapon model).

So basically, it's bragging rights. But if you were going to go this far, that's probably all you cared about anyways.

And that is the final unlockable in the game. I assume you'll have enjoyed the way (I sure as hell did), and you can go show off to your friends that you beat the same game 6 times to unlock a virtual schoolgirl costume. No regrets.

Little note about Hugo EX :
When fire beams active, Eyes of Fact can still shooting missiles, make him does massive damage when fire skill active.

It's been a while but to my knowledge, you need to have beaten the game with every character, every EX character, and beaten the game on Nightmare with each character on either their EX or normal form. I believe you can do the Nightmare playthrough with EX forms on, but you will need to beat the game once on each character and their EX character to unlock the outfit.

So for Yunica's outfit, do I really need to complete the game with all the three characters in their normal form, and their again in EX?

Don't believe it's been changed, Nightmare is needed

Do you still have to beat the game on Nightmare to get the final unlockables? Has that been changed?
Doctor Zafari  [author] Aug 23, 2014 @ 7:37pm
It's been a while, but I believe it will work if you beat it with the EX versions.
Aurani Aug 23, 2014 @ 1:10pm
Will it work if I do Nightmare clears using the EX versions or do I need to beat Nightmare with the normal versions?
