After almost 5k hours in rust over roughly three years, there is many things I could say about it.
To all you newbies joining rust over the Christmas period (and any later periods) I have a few tips to ensure your success.
1) Get a feel of the survival parts of the game, if your new to fps games you will spend a lot of time dying until you get very good at evasion or pvp. Most new players find evasion the easiest way to succeed in Rust so I'll give you a few tips for that.
If your trying to avoid pvp/players in order to not die regularly live in areas of the map far from monuments and around node spawns. Don't live in naked spawns as you'll get constantly grubbed and doorcamped.
When running from A to B NEVER ever go in a straight line there unless there is cover all the way. Most of the time in rust you will die to a player running up on you/jumping you out of the blue so it is crucial that in order to prevent this you do not expose yourself to sight lines from loads of quadrants, forests, rocky ledges and dips can all make it easier for you to hide in the surrounding environment from watching players.
If your doing monuments to farm scrap or running loot I strongly recommend running the loot in the night, don't use your torch or any light but instead use your map. You will be much more difficult to spot and get killed, especially if you need to run across large open areas.

In pvp, I strongly recommend people practice for 20-100 hours in ukn combattag arenas (search ukn in the modded tab) on various guns to get used to the recoil and strategies in pvp. \Just jumping straight into the game is an easy way to lose countless gearsets instead of profiting.

Finally, and probably the most important rule for early stage players in rust. Don't take gearsets and gear out of your base that you can't afford to lose. Whilst the latest gun maybe cool and make you feel invincible, it won't, and I have killed many sar/ak/bolty /tier 2/tier 3 players who were clearly new to the game and didn't realise that a db is just as lethal as an ak from 10m away.
