Sometimes a truly special game comes along that makes you rethink your approaches to prior games you've played and what your criteria is for a perfect game. Baldurs Gate 3 is hands down a genre-defining game that I only hope pushes the industry as a whole to rise to the standard that it sets. Unique, branching, decision-driven gameplay backed by world class voice acting gives players of this game the ability to bring themselves to extreme emotional highs and lows through their own volition. The complexity of each character's backstory makes them a fitting part of a ragtag group of adventurers burdened with saving the world while grappling with their own moral dilemmas and motivations. In a way, each character makes you feel torn between wanting to help them see a happy ending with the way their personal motives malign with their task of saving the world. You want to see it all through, and some characters even make you question whether the world is worth saving to begin with. While Baldur's Gate 3 is open-world, it doesn't suffer from the same, "explore, find a vantage point, and unlock that area of the map," gameplay loop that has plagued RPGs of the last decade. Instead, the game rewards exploration with well-placed story events, new quests, and world-building based on just the context of bodies, items, and notes lying around. With games like Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild, and now Baldur's Gate 3, we will look back on this time in gaming nostalgically. I hope people recognize and support the effort, attention, and care put into the creation of this game to ensure we keep getting spoiled with more games as great as Baldur's Gate. With the incredible world building they've done here, I can only hope the world is further expanded upon through additional DLC campaigns, because Larian Studios has basically sold me on anything they make from this point forward by releasing such a game.
