As an experienced MOBA player I find Dota 2 tedious rather than fun. It is extremely punishing to new players, the champion and the item pools are huge and It just feels overwhelming. Getting a sense of comfort in your knowledge of the "basics" is unfeasible. On the plus side it offers a great diversity of champions with unique play-styles, but that just doesn't make up for the amount of time you will have to spend just to get a grasp of each of them.
Overall the game is not terrible or unplayable it is definitely a close 3rd or 4th place in the genre it just offers little for what it requires and the element of "Hype" is just never present in the community. I would not encourage you to try it if you are not essentially bored of all the other more popular titles. If i could give an anecdote to the feeling i get playing Dota it would be like signing up to play a regular 5min-round chess game and ending up in a speed chess contest with at least 7 people who've played it for the past 4 months intensively (Resulting from the lack of new players/Lack of general
gaming community interest in the game).

Best game to play if you don't have enough money to buy Diablo III.
