For the Destiny 1 players, Destiny 2 is almost at the level of Destiny 1 during the Rise of Iron expansion. Truly one of the greatest franchises I have ever played.

For the new players, this game has some of the best gun-play of any current game. The loot system is very refined, the leveling feels good, and the amount of content is staggering. With that in mind, it takes a lot of time and dedication to not only experience everything, but to actually have the ability to complete some of the higher-level activities.

Would NOT recommend if you don't have friends to play with or are not willing to find some new ones that do. There are many resources for finding a group but many of the best activities require coordination and bodies.
