TLTR Dont buy. Starts out relaxed. In the end only timed puzzles.

Leuke TowerDefense/Auto Battler.

MONARK is a story-driven JRPG with a decent amount of grinding that's a fairly recent release from NIS America, Inc. Aside from the expected anime-style 3D artwork, the game is accompanied by fantastic music and all spoken dialogue. For the price, you can probably expect a bit more than the game has to offer, though it is still an enjoyable game overall. If you don't like to read story dialogue or if you don't like to do any kind of grinding, this game is probably not for you. Otherwise, it's reasonable to give it a shot if you think it's the right price.

Story
In MONARK you conveniently take on the role of a student with amnesia with the goal to safe the world. A strange mist appears in the halls at Shin Mikado Academy, driving people into madness if they stay in the mist for too long.

Inside the mist is another reality, the Otherworld, where the Daemons and the Monarks reside. There are 7 Monarks and they are based on the 7 deadly sins (pride, gluttony, etc.). Some humans can have contact with this Otherworld, these are the Pactbearers. You are one such individual, and you will need to face the growing darkness in order to save those you care about.

The story is rather interesting and at times eerie. This sets the tone for the game.

Gameplay
Each time you step into the mist, you need to find a Pactbearer. Along the way, you will need to solve various puzzles. To gather clues, the other students in the mist will lead you in the right direction. You also cannot stay too long in the mist, since it will also drive you increasingly crazy. The infirmary is where you go to heal up.

The actual battles in the game are turn-based. Each member of your team can walk a few steps and then use an action. If the enemies are too far away, you may need to wait a turn. Waiting heals for a percentage of your health as well. At the price of increasing madness, you can use one teammate to give another an extra turn.

The attacks and usable skills will cost certain percentage of madness or your overall health. You will need to keep a close eye on both in order to succeed.

After winning each battle, you will get some items and some spirit points, these are needed to level up. In leveling up, you will will choose to upgrade a skill and your experience level will also increase.

Each member of your team need to be leveled up individually, and new members start at level 1. So you will need to do a decent amount of grinding in order to gather enough spirit points. for the level-ups.

Graphics
The graphics are in the usual 3D anime style and they are okay. For a €59,99 game, I guess I expected a bit more from the artwork and graphical details.

Music & Dialogues
The music is really fantastic, especially during the boss fights. All of the dialogue is spoken, with choice of Japanese and English, so that is very nicely done.

Controls
The game can be played entirely with a controller.

Pricing
I think €59.99 is a bit steep for this game. It does offer a lot of gameplay, but considering everything together as a whole, I would wait for a sale.

Verdict
MONARK has its ups and downs, specifically it's enjoyable if you get into the story and are okay with grinding a lot. So there are limitations on who might like this game.

Personally I don't mind grinding, and I have really enjoyed the game until now. I have not yet finished the game. I can recommend the game based on my own experience.

Verdict: 7/10

Spirits of the Hellements - TD is a Tower Defense game with monsters instead of traditional towers. Unlock upgrades and new maps as you play. The game can be addictive with lengthy maps. This is definitely a game for people who are into Tower Defense games.

Gameplay
This is not a traditional tower defense game, because instead of towers, you get monsters instead. The monsters look very good. Playing will unlock major upgrades, new towers, and also new maps.

The game has four different difficulty settings and one that's good for casual players or newcomers to the genre.

The game features an in-game tutorial, which explains almost everything.

As in most TD games, you can set the path that the monsters/enemies walk in.

There are 5 chapters in total, each featuring multiple maps. The individual maps can be rather long to play through, but the checkpoints are there so that you don't always have to restart the maps from the beginning.

At the end of each stage, you get to pick from among three buff/debuff pairs to keep the game interesting carrying into the next map.

Graphics
The graphics are very good, the monsters and towers are very detailed. The colors are bright and I love how everything looks!

Music & Sounds
The music is okay, and the opening tune is nice.

Controls
The game can be fully played with a mouse.

Pricing
The price of €9,99/$11.99 is a very good price. You get a lot of gameplay for it.

Verdict
Spirits of the Hellements - TD is a very addictive Tower Defense game, definitely a good game to check out for fans of the genre. The price is also really good for the amount of gameplay.

Verdict: 7.5/10

Exodus Borealis is a City-Builder/Tower-Defense game that welcomes its players but still offering some challenges.

Gameplay
The game starts with an in-game tutorial that really takes you by the hand. You can always disable it and try to figure things out on your own instead.

The game focuses on the building of a city and its subsequent defense as various enemies come to attack. Your defenses are the towers and walls of the city, with progressive upgrades as you play.

There are many things you need to research in order to unlock, making better buildings/structures possible. You will need to keep a close eye on your resources such as housing and food for people, otherwise your citizens will starve.

Regularly you will be attacked by monsters running through the gate. You have to create towers to protect your city. Not all of your towers need to be within the city itself. Like most other Tower-Defense games, you can use towers to redirect the paths of the enemies.

If an enemy enters the city, they will not destroy everything, though you will see some buildings get damaged/destroyed.

Fortunately the game has multiple save files, and you can easily go back moments if you made a mistake. You will not need to restart from the beginning every time you want to undo a mistake. You can just reload a previous save and try something different.

The game features a few different difficulty options, so this allows more casual players to enjoy the game but still give harder options to those looking for some serious challenges.

It's nice that the game is translated into many different languages. Even my native language (Dutch) is there as an option.

Graphics
The graphics are okay, not really outstanding in any way.

Music
I really like the opening tune. The overall sound effects in the game are nice with some relaxing background music. Rather well done.

Controls
The game can be fully played with a mouse. But you will need to use the keyboard for full camera controls.

Pricing
€16.79/$19.99 seems to me like a fair price. The game runs very well and offers plenty of gameplay. Each new game could be different.

Verdict
I do think that this is a very nice game. I have played a few hours already now with my first city. Sometimes the challenges are fun, but never too hard. I really enjoy the fact that this game is super easy to get into, and that there is not a lot of micromanagement.

Even though the graphics are not that great, it does not detract from the overall gameplay and enjoyment of the game.

I can fully recommend this one. Verdict: 8/10

Ieder gevecht is bijna hetzelfde.

Telepath Tactics Liberated is a strategy RPG that’s worth your attention if you enjoy SRPGs. It features fun and strategic battles with a nice story.

Story
The story starts with two sisters who were taken in by reptilians and trained to fight after escaping slavery. They are trying to essentially liberate others. Along the way, they will meet many others who will also provide help.

What I did like
+Battles are really fun and very strategic.
+You can undo move planning, to a certain extent.
+If you make some mistakes, you can choose to restart a full battle.
+Steam workshop feature allows you to download new battles.
+You will level up during battles and learn new skills in the process.
+Many difficulty settings to allow players with all skill levels to enjoy the game.

What I didn’t like
-Even though there is autosave and manual save functions each turn while in battle, I would prefer manual saving at any time, and that’s not an option.
-Explanations are not clear at times, including controls. For example, I didn’t know you could open sacks with loot in the beginning of the game.
-Inventory and shop information can be really confusing. It’s not always clear what your team members can equip, and sometimes you have to level up to equip an item. When you are in the shop, you won’t know until you make the purchase.

Graphics
The graphics are very colorful and look good even when zooming in. The cutscenes are well done and are not too long.

Controls
Telepath Tactics Liberated can be fully played with a mouse. You can use the keyboard for some functions also, for example, controlling the camera.

Pricing
The price is a little steep for an indie game. But if you like SRPGs it’s surely worth it.

Gameplay Video

Verdict
If you are a fan of SRPGs you definitely need to check to this game out. The fun and strategic battles with the nice story make it a worthwhile game. Other things such as Steam workshop is a nice bonus.

Overall a great strategy game: 8/10

Early Access Review

This is my first impressions review of Wartales, which is an open-world RPG in medieval times with turn-based battles. The game recently became available in Early Access, but everything works so well together already with a huge world and so many things to do, that I could easily think that the game is in full release instead.

Gameplay
Starting up a new game, you will pick one positive trait as well as one negative, to tell the game what kind of of a quest taker you are. You can also set the battles to easy, normal, or hard settings. I am playing on normal, where the battles are challenging, but doable. You can set the simulation to one of those difficulty settings as well.

Your starting party is 4 characters, and you can hire more people later on. You will need to manage your resources, as each team member needs payment and also food.

You can choose from various quests, with differing difficulties as well. Harder quests will yield more gold and fame. You can also give each member a job. For example, a member can become a thief and can then pick locks on chests. These jobs give you small mini games associated. This is very nicely done.

Walking on the world map, you can encounter NPCs such as traders for business or bandits for combat encounters.

Graphics
The artwork looks really great, with nice details all around. I do wish I could zoom in more on the world map. In addition, the font is really small at times and difficult to read. I hope this will be fixed during the EA updates or that we will be given options for adjustments.

Music & Sounds
The music is very nice, but there is a lacking of voice overs. I do hope that these will be added later on.

Controls
The game can be fully played with a mouse.

Pricing
€34,99 does seem a bit high for an early access title, but I do think it is well worth the price. There is so much to see and to do. I am really enjoying the game so far.

Verdict
If you like turn-based battles and enjoy RPGs, this is definitely a title to look out for. For me Wartales feels a bit like an easier version of Battle Brothers. But don’t get me wrong, because this game is still challenging, not to mention the difficulty options available. In my opinion, Battle Brothers is just really difficult.

I am enjoying my time with Wartales so I can fully recommend it!
