My friend bought me this game for Christmas just cause I was feeling left out from everyone else playing it. This quickly became one of my favorite games and is exactly what I wanted from a zombie survival game. It's very difficult, with tons of stuff to learn, but long-term survival is very possible if you're careful enough. Your deaths and successes are almost always on you, and it feels very satisfying to survive just a few more days than last time. And even if you don't want a hardcore experience, there are settings to tailor the difficulty to exactly what you like, and mods to go even farther with it. Probably not for everyone though, and I would recommend watching gameplay of it somewhere else before buying it yourself.
