If you're on the fence regarding this game due to the culture, fandom, and following surrounding it, I'd like to give a few basic ideas on what the game actually is. Undertale is a bullet-hell role-playing game heavily inspired by games such as Earthbound which follows the journey of a kid through the Underground trying to make it back to the surface. I won't tell you anything else as it would essentially spoil a lot of the game's most interesting uses of game mechanics. If you're a fan of games like Earthbound, you will most likely enjoy Undertale. A criticism of the game would have to be the visuals, which can leave a bit more desired. Aside from that, the OST (I think) is phenomenal, the story is incredibly touching and emotional (again opinion), the characters are memorable (opinion), and the use of gameplay mechanics interwoven with the narrative leads to a prime example of a story that could only truly be told via the medium of video games. If none of this intrigues, then I'm afraid the game just isn't for you. However, if you are at all interested in anything I have said, then do yourself a favor and play the game, hopefully in a completely blind and spoiler-free playthrough. Play the game how you want, and experience it for yourself.
