Early Access Review
Initially I was reserved on purchasing this game as I was highly skeptical of it's Early Access status but after a friend of mine vouched from his experience I picked it up and to my surprise I was not disappointed.

Northgard manages to take the common intricacies of the RTS genre and successfully simplifies them into a more compact and manageable format all the while shifting and varying some of the usual features. Although someone thoroughly experienced with the genre might find this game underwhelming it is an especially good introduction to those who are interested in the genre and would like to give it a try. As someone returning to the genre I found myself once again caught up in all the usual elements, it was a very much comfortable return.

What this game does particularly well is presentation, from the environment to the general aesthetics the game looks clean and very polished. The clearly defined art direction might not be to everyone's appeal but I found it particularly satisfying.

Another aspect that Northgard does particularly well is the incorporation of it's Nordic inspired backdrop within the game mechanics and the general environment. The most obvious of these features is of course the seasonal cycle, which greatly influences your planning and strategy in-game. Other features include the unique winning conditions as well as neutral factions you encounter, not to mention the more obvious art design. This direction for the game leaves many open doors for future opportunities, features and content.

The best feature of the game, it's compact and defined nature may also prove to be, in some ways its main weakness. After some hours you obtain a pretty thorough understanding of the game mechanics and features, after obtaining most of the in-game achievements and victories there is something left to be desired. There is some depth in the form of experimentation with various strategies and build orders as is typical with most RTS games but beside multiplayer there doesn't seem to be much to keep your casual player coming back, even I found myself drained.

Fortunately the developers are highly consistent in maintaining the game and communicating with the player base, taking suggestions and advice, which is very promising. It’s hard not to stay optimistic.

I hope for the best and will be keeping a watchful eye for future updates as I have enjoyed my time with the game thus far. RTS is not a genre for everybody but if you have played RTS games in the past and are looking to get back into it or are curious, this is the perfect game to do that with.
