In Vichy, private detective. Number one. One day, man murdered. Lipstick heart drawn around body. Case of the Lipstick Killer! Then, wife attack policeman who come! I chain her up. Blood everywhere. Policeman barely alive. Security system activate, I run! No leads- cold, stinky, broke. But City of Vichy hire me. Now I have fancy echelon apartment and diamond collection.

My big secret? Policeman did it. I talk to wife, apologize (give money) and search house. Surprise! Policeman was policewoman, and in love with husband! Kill in jealous rage! She worth much money and her apartment filled with diamonds husband bought her.

I good detective. The best!

This game. Is. Incredible. It's like the caviar of medieval gaming. It feels like all the best parts of some of the best, most nostalgia inducing games all got together and had an illicit love child, except it doesn't feel like it's ripping off anything? Roguelite? check. Strategy? check. Crafting? check. Open-world? check.

The only thing I'm mad about is that I somehow only just found out about it. I'm still early in, but I'll change this if I get a lobotomy and suddenly start disliking the game or something.

I'm glad I didn't let the steam reviews deter me because this game is awesome! I can't speak to the criticisms many other commentators mention about the dev process, but I can say that this game is an absolute gem. The best I can describe it is as Sid Meier's Pirates, Port Royale, and EVE Online rolled up in one. There's a steep learning curve, but if you google 'Naval Action quickstart guide' the game goes from grind to fun very very quickly.

The combat is fantastic and the graphics are gorgeous, and those are definitely the game's biggest upsides. Downsides include the unintuitive UI and grindy economy, but if you like slower paced games then this is definitely for you. Definitely better with friends, but I made a couple while participating in a community event which really elevated the experience.

Edit: I get it now. The game held (past tense) a ton of promise, but others are spot on in talking about the path it's taking and its future potential. It's a shame, really, but nothing else to do about it.

Honestly Royal Court is a little bit of a letdown. It was a long wait, which sure that's whatever, but the best parts of that wait are all centered around the dynamic culture mechanics and the free update additions.

The actual Royal Court feature, which the DLC is named for, is novel but disappointing. It's all optional, so you don't have to hold court or engage with the mechanics, which is kind of a plus because after a few hours they're already kind of tedious (Plus the court itself doesn't look good with the lighting being all washed out and uber-bright, not to mention characters' eyes and stiff poses. I'd rather it be dark and realistic looking so I didn't have to see how awkward everyone looks).

It's not all bad - artifacts and court artifacts are a welcome addition as something that felt missing when CK3 released.

Court events seem a bit skewed to the point that holding court is straight up dangerous; my half-brother and friend who was imprisoned by another king showed up at court and tried to murder me despite being imprisoned and having +80 opinion. Another time a random mayor who wasn't in any factions drew a knife and disfigured me, my wife, and my seneschal for unknown reasons (Opinion +10). Alrighty then.

It's also not very multiplayer friendly, as you're either rushing to click through as fast as you can or you're sighing as your friend takes too long to finish and unpause. It's definitely an improvement over the base game, that's for sure, but $30 is far too ambitious of a price tag. Maybe I'd review it differently if it were only $15.

So, Eu4 is a bit of a mixed bag. One of the (if not the) coolest strategy games ever? Check. Insane replayability? Check. Constant updates and free content? Check.

Of course, there's a few downsides as well, such as new mechanics you have to learn and adapt to every patch, a truly massive amount of DLC that's vital to your really being able to play the game, and of course the sometimes variable quality of updates.

I have over 1800 hours in the game, and I pre-ordered it back in 2013 before it was even released. Why am I only now writing a review? Well, the Paradox community is kind of volatile, and their reactions swing wholeheartedly one way or another with each release and update. Leviathan (the newest update) is absolutely trash and is gamebreaking, but most of the community acts as though Paradox has shanked them in the back and is standing over them laughing evilly. If you're looking to get into EU4 as a new player, just don't buy the Leviathan DLC until they fix this mess and rollback your game to 1.30.6. It really is that easy. EU4 is a fantastic game, and while Paradox's newest studio really dropped the ball with their first ever release, I know it'll get fixed eventually. And if it doesn't, 1.30.6 has all the content I could ever want. EU4 is a fantastic game that has stood and will stand the test of time.

The one and only game where I've been challenged, found myself continually struggling, and still been proud of myself despite it. Truly a great game, and though I've played others for far longer this is the first time I've felt strongly enough about a game to write a review.
