beautiful and intriguing and i wish to explore it more but i can not STAND the completely pointless arbitrary combat. literally you did not need to put it in the game, it would change nothing, unless theres some big payoff later on that i havent seen maybe??

someone else said it well - this game cant decide whether it wants to be a power fantasy or a tactical shooter.
especially near the end and on higher difficulties, you die incredibly quickly and suddenly. the whole game is marketed around being a sick action movie jump and flip around and kill dudes in slow mo but as it goes on, jumping out of cover and getting ballsy is more and more of a suicide button.
enemies also get very bullet spongy, save for the normal grunts that die in one headshot after you knock off their helmet (with one or two direct hits). that, along with the insane damage they end up doing, especially in groups, makes you need to play very covered and cowardly. this makes sense for a tactical shooter, but not a single facet of this game is designed as a tactical shooter aside from the one shot headshots and insane damage done to the player... encounters arent designed around that, levels are DEFINITELY not designed around that.
also the heavy guys are way too agile. they move slow, yes, but they can spin around and shotgun you in a split second, even if you JUST uncloaked and took your first shot and theyre totally unaware, they will spin around and one shot you unless you instantly take cover, cloak again, maneuver around them again, and shoot their back again. expect to do this 2 or 3 times per heavy.

oh and that doesnt even guaruntee a kill, it just explodes their back tank which does damage and knocks them over. the only way to kill them quickly is to magdump their face to break their helmet, but that involves them looking at you, which kills you because they have shotguns that do immense damage.
so youd think the idea there would be that you should shoot them from a distance. but thats not an option, unless you have the DMR which is extremely rare and holds very few magazines. every other gun is very inaccurate while moving (again, a tac-shooter mechanic that is at odds with the action movie type gameplay this is going for) while standing still is a death sentence. it also doesnt help that their shotguns dont have damage falloff. I hate this trend in horde shooters especially where theres a strong target in the middle of the weaker targets but the strong target is such a damn chore to defeat every time.

aside from glaring gameplay flaws like this, its extremely fun. its just incredibly frustrating how the game is at odds with its own vibe like this - i jump in the game to be a cool superhero gun guy yet am punished for it no matter how much i exploit the superpowers, unless i play reeeeeeeeeeeally slow and methodical and run off after every kill.

i do totally adore this game, so i will recommend it, but it just makes these issues hurt me all that much more when they smack me down from my highs...

when im in a childishly shortsighted and self-destructive greed competition and my opponent is people who already have more money and job security than any mere mortal could even dream of

Early Access Review
If i had a nickel for every first person roguelike with incredible gameplay, wonderful art direction, bangin soundtrack, set to a far future dystopia where corrupted robots have overtaken a once peaceful and prosperous city and is now destined to be taken back by a small group of somehow uncorrupted robots, id have two nickels, which isnt a lot but its wierd that theres two of them.

i say this with full affection. i love roboquest and i love this game.

this one in particular though, i A D O R E the visuals here. i see a beautiful mix of megaman and, oddly enough, my memories of the Egg Carrier interior from Sonic Adventure DX. both hit my brain just right, mixed up into a genuinely gorgeous view of a prosperous future.

on that note, i also really enjoy that all of the areas youre in are human-abandoned but not run down at all. theyre all completely clean and running perfectly, with lots of movement and details going on. this is personal preference, but i much much much prefer fighting (and breaking and destroying and splattering) in more functional and pristine areas than places that were already destroyed before i got there. plus it just allows for much more visual fun, when everything isnt gray rubble and dust.

also just in general, we really need more first person games where you can punch enemies and send them flying into walls, traps, and other enemies. ive been needing a game with this feature for a long time and im surprised its not more common - slam-punching enemies with a massive gorilla punch and sending them flying is a UNIVERSALLY fun experience, surely??

I understand there are a couple levels where the enemies are on drugs and a couple levels where the enemies are fanatics who would realistically fearlessly run into combat and use their training effectively

but every single enemy acts like both a suicidal druggie and a well trained weathered veteran. this does not work well with a cop game where shooting first is a ROE violation that reduces points and gets you yelled at. if you yell for compliance, you get shot. if you don't, you get points deducted and the noise tells every ai in the level where you are and then they shoot you before you can see them. absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for a game like this.

youll find plenty of more informative and essay-like reviews, so instead of adding a drop in THAT bucket, im just gonna copypaste my gushing discussion post relating to the 1.0 update that just came out.

i cant think of a single thing i hate about this update. final boss area is awesome, it was a great idea to have it be extra short but extra hard, since many people were already used to corrupted haven being the final level, adding another full length level on top of that might just feel exhausting. great idea there.

havent gotten to try the new class yet but im excited to, and even if i dont like it, every other class already feels great to play. i already have a favorite (green guy) and least favorite (orange commando) but even then i refrain from sticking to my fav and play every other one plenty, even commando if im feeling up for an adventurous self-challenge, and even with him i have fun even if i find it hard to actually win a run.

the enemy destruction and ragdolls are awesome. very satisfying and fun while also easy enough to fly past when youre on a roll.
movement, as always, is obviously pretty much immaculate and lots of fun.

one thing i love about this game over other roguelikes is i feel it is more dependant on skill, and therefore you feel progress through your playtime without it needing to be dependant on unlocks. sure its fun getting a broken build that lets you AFK in other roguelikes but this game always makes me feel so awesome when i really get on a roll, aiming well, positioning well, using movement, rather than relying on just finding one good item to carry me. fantastic design.
