This game is great for co-op play. It's also one of the only early access games that I would not hesitate to recommend! The developers give frequent updates, including Q&A and what's-in-the-next-alpha videos. The earlier alphas were really easy and survivable, and horrible to run on my not-gaming friendly laptop. The subsequent alphas have improved the UI, the difficulty of the game and improved on performance. Definitely play the random-gen maps with friends! I cannot speak to how the start of the game is not friendly to new players, since I've been playing through quite a few versions and the game has changed (for the better) since when I first started.
